It’s no secret that sexism is a big part of the music industry—take “Hot in Herre,” the song that made my mother turn beet red when I started to sing it at age six. We often become immune to the sexist undertones in songs, as they have become as mainstream as hipster beards. Yet here are ten songs where the sexism is as subtle as a hurricane
1. "Areola" by Tech N9ne
Yes that is the name of the song and no I am not making it up. Listen for yourself and be prepared for your jaw to drop as soon as the chorus comes in.
Choice lyric: That shirt came off and showed a.../Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!)
2. "A Woman’s Touch" from Calamity Jane the Musical
This is one of my favorite musicals of all time, and when I watched it recently for the first time in a while, I was shocked I had never recognized the sexism in this song. It’s all about domesticity, how a “woman’s touch” is all that’s needed for house to become a home. I still love this musical and Doris Day is a gift to the world, but man, this song just makes me shake my head.
Choice lyric: It makes you blink, to stop and think/A woman and a whisk broom/Can accomplish so darn much/So never underestimate a woman's touch
3. "Dear Future Husband" by Meghan Trainor
Kinda crazy that a gal who sang about body positivity would go and record this song, huh?
Choice lyric: 'Cause if you'll treat me right/I'll be the perfect wife/Buying groceries/Buy-buying what you need
4. "Bumpy Ride" by Mohombi
I play this song exclusively to annoy my mom. The whole song is about how Mohombi will take your body on a “bumpy ride”—is the beat good? Yes. But does a bumpy ride sound like a good time? No.
Choice lyric: I wanna boom bang bang with your body yo/We’re gonna rough it up before we take it slow/Girl lemme rock you rock you like a rodeo (It's gonna be a bumpy ride)
5. "I’m In It" by Kanye West (Really the entire album)
Oh, Kanye. As much as this album displays great audio work and calling out race issues, it also doubles as a complete attack on women. Yikes.
Choice lyric: The entire song. Seriously.
