A Thank You To My College Roommate

Sorry if this is weird, but I think you might be my roommate.

I remember the day I got an email with the simple subject line saying “Roommate?” Who knew that email would be the beginning of our friendship?

I’m not going to lie but on move in day I was leery to meet you. I had heard all of these horror stories of bad roommates and not getting along with your roommate. But I also heard stories of college roommates being friends for life. When I first walked into our shared dorm I did not know what to expect. Would we be instant best friends or would we hate each other? Luckily, we got along right away. For a while we were inseparable. We would eat in the dining hall together, study together and walk to class together. I couldn’t of asked for a better college roommate.

Thank you for all the late night conversations, food runs and study sessions. Thank you for going along with my shenanigans. Thank you for taking my laundry out of the dryer when I was late to class. Thank you for encouraging me to do my schoolwork when all I wanted to do was binge watch Netflix.

No one quite understands my major like you do. We’re able to bounce ideas off of each other, proof read each other’s work, and share sources and come up with story ideas together. I’m so glad we are both journalism majors.

I will miss walking into our room and finding you binge watching something new whether it be Cops, Cheaters, RuPaul’s Drag Race or French soap operas. You always seem to amaze me by the new shows you watch. I will never forget the time I walked in on you screaming at the screen watching rugby.

Although, we live with other people now I am glad you were my first college roommate. We have so many memories to look back on when we are older, like exploring Downtown Phoenix in the middle of the night or taking the sketchy light rail for the first time together. Thank you for being you!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
