Why the First Week of School is Never Fun

Five reasons on why school's first week is difficult

No matter how much you love going to school, the first week is always the last fun, and most stressful. There are many factors that make the first week the worst and most hated week of school, even for the people who love going to school.

Waking Up Early

Waking up early after getting little to no sleep is no fun, and going to any school forces that upon you. Sure, you try to get into a habit of going to bed early and waking up on time, but that rhythm is one that is hard to start, and thus getting up early makes the first week hard on the night owls.

Parking

After you jump over the hurdle of getting up early, you now have to deal with attempting to park on campus, which is like a nightmare level out of a video game. The first week is often the worst to find a parking spot, as everyone wants to get the best parking spot, showing up hours early sometimes just to get one. Those who have class that start later, or don’t get up super early won’t be able to park close, and must walk for and extra half mile or so to get in campus itself. Though this does get better as the semester goes on, and people start not coming to class, among other issues, but for the first week, the heat and extra-long walk doesn’t help with the stress of everything else.

Book Troubles

Now you are in your first class, and guess what? You have the wrong book, or even better, you need to get another book that wasn’t listed on the booklist for the class. This isn’t as much of a big deal, but hey, you now have to throw more money into your education, which is not always sunshine and daisies.

Class Anxieties

Okay, this also happens often, but realizing you are in class without anyone you know is not very fun. This becomes much worse when you are in a class that fills an auditorium, and now say hello to your good friend anxiety. This problem does recede as the semester gets on, you make friends in the class, or people stop coming and thus make the class smaller, but it isn’t fun that first week, trust me.

Homework

Homework just isn’t fun anyways, but it helps you better understand the course. The problem here is getting it that first week, and not having the book, or even better, getting so much homework piled on you that you have to decide which assignment is more important to do, and all of this on the first week! If you aren’t good at time-keeping, a stack of homework will definitely help you become an expert at it!

The First week is never fun, and especially if someone has to deal with all of this, and perhaps even more, but don’t worry, it does get better. So hang in there, friends! Take a deep breath, take a break, and good luck to those who just started school!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
