37 First Week of Class Thoughts

You never really know what a new school year has in store for you until you're sitting through all the same orientations for each class. You can always think that you're prepared by buying new notebooks or folders, but really that's the only thing you have successfully accomplished. The summer hadn't really prepared you for sitting in a classroom for more than an hour while listening to the teacher go over a syllabus that was already posted on Blackboard. Now, I understand it is important to know what is going on, but all I'm saying is that it is much different than waking up at 11 a.m. to go make a bomb breakfast sandwich. Here are some things that have gone through my head as I walked into class and saw that another year of my life had passed.

1. "WUT am I doing in here again?"

2. Seeing that professor around campus and thinking they are so relaxed and giving, but in reality it's quite the opposite. Sad day.

3. "What am I going to have for din din tonight...pizza rolls?...pizza rolls."

4. "I have 35 more weeks to go."

5. "So, when is Friday?"

6. "Netflix it is."

7. "What makes a bunch of papers stuck together so expensive?"

8. "Hopefully Ma will send me a care package that includes a $100 bill -- yas."

9. "I just spent $50 on wall decor..."

10. "Have people over to watch endless Disney movies? Sure."

11. "I wonder who has the most stocked refrigerator on campus."

12. "Definitely becoming friends with them. ^"

13. "I wonder what my friends at home are doing?"

14. "Probably missing me."

15. "But not as much as I am missing them."

16. "How long will it take until I run out of things to think about?"

17. "Why am I always so tired?"

18. "Oh, probably because I'm sitting in an 8 a.m. class."

19. "Who is that person?"

20. "When will I ever graduate and travel the world?"

21. "What would happen if I won $100,000,000?"

22. "No one would know, probably."

23. "I swear if I get another email I'm going to flip this table."

24. "You mean coming to college means you actually have to study?"

25. "I wonder what time the gym will have the least amount of people in it."

26. "Wonder what morning team workout will be the hardest of the week."

27. "I am about to die when we start them. ^"

28. "How many chapters do I have to read in order to pass? All of them."

29. "What I learned in boating school is...."

30. "Siri, stop trying to go off in the middle of class."

31. "I'm just trying to get to graduation."

32. "This week feels like it's meant to be attended in my room."

33. "Why is gray a shade and not a color?"

34. "I wonder who I could get to buy me a turtle."

35. "I need water to make it through this lecture."

36. "Calls for more bathroom breaks."

37. "Step your game up and do your homework."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
