What It's Like Your First Week Of Freshman Year
Lexi Pilz

College is a scary time especially freshman year. You are moving away from your parents and moving towards being on your own. They drop you off at college and you freak out, or some may even smile. What you do not realize are the great changes within yourself, great challenges, or the amazing memories you are about to make with so many amazing people even within just the first week. This makes the first week vital new and scary.

Within the first week of my college experience I had already grown close to one girl in my mind named Jessica, she was super sweet. Even though I know at times I can be a little clingy and over bearing when meeting new people, she always smiled and let me sit with her. I practically live in her room. To some people this may not seem significant, but to me, it was. I have anxiety through the roof so this experience was already beginning to change me. I wasn't hiding out in my room. I had a friend. This was a huge change in who I was and even right now, I can see that as the year progresses, I will keep changing. It was not by chance you can tell by the first week college will change you.

For freshman, the first week is also built with many challenges such as learning to balance classes and also learning when to leave for classes without being too early. In high school the syllabus was a possible outline that might stick, but for most college classes they expect you to read it and stay caught up. For most, this leads to a world of struggle in figuring out how to balance. Although most pick up quickly the schedule and balance that works well for them as I did, it is vital to come in prepared and ready to work way past the first week. This isn't high school, it is not going to be first week and I am done.

Memories are also made pretty quickly. In high school you maybe made 12 memories with a group by the end of the year if you were senior. In college it is so different, it changes your outlook on life. From late night netflix with your roomie, to Pelicans with the people on your hall, you instantly start making memories. Within the first week I have so many inside jokes and even just great memories to share with my parents. The difference in how fast memories are made in college is amazing. It is going to be the best times of your life, and the great memories happen constantly and consistently.

College is one of the most amazing and different experiences you will have and we all know that going in, but no one tells the freshman how fast it starts going. By the first week you have learned to live away from home, started learning how to balance your workload, and have made tons of memories all the while who you are has started to change. When I came home, I already had a few personality changes from just a week. No one warns you how fast college life settles in and it is the most amazing thing. So prepare, love, and work hard because freshman year is about to be the bomb.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
