As a high school senior, I dreamed of what walking on campus for the first time would feel like. Not for an interview, and not to visit the school. I asked myself, what would it be like when I finally got my chance to unload my belongings into my dorm, and attend my first college class? The very first week of school was not only the busiest, overwhelming week of the semester, (besides finals) but it was the most memorable week that I remember, and one that caused a lot of change for the better.
When I first arrived on campus, I had with six giant boxes filled with junk, and an SUV that my parents rented because our Mini Cooper couldn’t possibly fit six, let alone two boxes; and some memorable pictures of my friends that I had stashed in my purse for courage.
There was specific parking rules, parents buzzing and crowding their “to be” college students, and ROTC guys helping carry stuff up the stairs. I’ll admit it was a lot at once-and no one was by any means calm. I brought everything up to the third floor, ad our schools’ freshman dorms are coed by floor. I finally met my roommate, and we were able get moved in, in spite of all of the chaos. Our parents then tearfully departed, and we were finally able to relax for a bit.
I’d like to say the commotion died down, but sadly, we had orientation groups less than an hour after we got breakfast. It was extremely tiring spending all day meeting new people. It may have been utterly exhausting, but I guess without everything scheduled in the freshman class would be bumbling around unsure of where to go.
Besides the fact that we had absolutely no free time, orientation was a bit fun in a silly way. In fact, I met one of my closest friends from the college that way. When classes started, everything seemed a little duller for a while. Of course everybody is still adjusting, and we would be for the rest of the semester. I’m not sure that most people know anything different, as I’d be surprised if anyone had an easy transition; or rather not somewhat discombobulated.
It was a learning experience, no matter how chaotic. I cannot wait to find out how many more surprised are waiting for me next semester
