To My First College Best Friend

You are the Patrick to my Spongebob.

To My First College Best Friend
Me

Thank you.

I came to college excited, scared and nervous of who I would meet here. There were so many stories I heard from people hating college and making no friends to people having too many friends to count and loving it. I wasn't sure where I would fall. Would I make a bunch of friends or none at all? I was nervous. I was stressed. I will always be lucky that you were the one to pick me up when I was down.

The first night I thought my roommate hated me and I wanted to go home. But I'm so lucky you were there to make me feel not so alone. That was the night I knew we could be friends, right after you told me you wanted your own pizza. I wasn't sure if you just didn't want to share with me or if you weren't someone who shared pizza, but I went with you just weren't someone who shared her pizza.

Thank you for being my first college friend. Without you, I don't think I would've made it the rest of the semester. Thank you. Thank you for being there when I needed you the most — except for that time I had to go to the emergency room in the middle of the night and you didn't wake up, what was that all about? Kidding, I love you anyway. Thank you for listening to my rants about my professors and my classes.

Thank you for letting me cry to you because I missed my boyfriend so much when he was at boot-camp. Thank you for always sharing your clothes with me. Thank you for never being on a diet, and always calling a salad "rabbit's food." Thank you for adventuring with me when everyone else is off doing their own thing. Thank you for being you.

When it comes to college, I couldn't imagine it without you. I would probably be sitting in my room, alone, doing homework or something. I'd like to think I'd have more friends, but let's be real, no one would think I'm as funny as you do. No one would let me come to their room before class and change my whole outfit because I like your stuff better. No one would let me drag them across campus four times to vote on Super Tuesday. No one would listen to my endless rants about that annoying kid who sniffles Every. Single. Class.

I'm so lucky you stumbled into my room that first day of school, and I'm so lucky for all the fun we've had after that. Now that I'm brunette, I can officially say that every brunette needs a blonde best friend. I'm happy you're mine. Thank you for being the Patrick to my Spongebob and the cheese to my pizza.

Here's to you, my first college best friend. Can't wait for our next three years together.

Love,

Olive

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
