What Train Lyrics Taught Me About How Strong Words Are

Words will try to break you, shake you and stop your world from turning; don't let them.

There is a song written by the band "Train" I particularly admire. Actually, there are quite a few. To be honest, I'm pretty sure I love every single song they've ever written! There is one song specifically, however, that I think has one of the best messages I've heard in a song. "Words," released in 2010, is full of lyrics that can apply to any person of any age. Each line has a different bit of inspiration, encouragement and a miniature life lesson packed within. It starts off like this:

"I'd give anything, but I won't give up on you
I'd say anything, but not goodbye
I will run with your changes and I'm always on your side
And there's not a word I've ever heard that would make me change my mind."

I love the opening to the song because it automatically sets a positive mood. "But I won't give up on you" is just about the best thing you can hear from anyone you place your trust in, because it is reassurance that your trust is safe with them. I especially love the last line in the verse because it states in a unique way that no one else can influence that person's opinion on you except for you.

"Words they'll try to shake you
Don't let them break you
Or stop your world from turning
When words keep you from feeling good
Use them as firewood and let them burn."

The chorus, hands down, is my favorite message stored in this song. I remember a little saying from elementary school that read "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

It's a wonderful rhyme, but it is probably one of the biggest lies parents and teachers will tell you. Words do hurt. They hurt like hell. I think that we need to change that rhyme to this set of lyrics above. They teach you that instead of letting words break you down when they hurt you, take those words and use them to ignite a spark inside. Turn those negative feelings into powerful inspiration. Anyone who says painful words to you isn't someone you need in your life. Those people keep you from feeling good and make you feel like your world can no longer turn, which is not what a true friend should make you feel like.

"Like stones in your pocket people try to wear you down
Someone always wants to take the love you've found
So let's run with these changes and I want you by my side
And there's not a word I've ever heard that would make me change my mind."

There are always going to be people who don't particularly like you in your life, people who will try to bring you down farther than you ever thought you could go. Unfortunately, we sometimes let them succeed in doing so. Why? It gives those people a satisfaction that they don't deserve in the least. I know it's easy to let someone get to you. We naturally want to be loved and accepted by everyone, so when it doesn't quite work out like that, it makes us feel inferior. Well, wake up, smell the coffee and realize that not everyone will like you, but those who matter in your life will love and adore you for each and every one of your flaws that someone else might not.

"Let them burn
Let them burn
Underneath every word somebody's heart been broken
With or without words we try to forgive."

The chorus repeats and is followed by a friendly reminder to let those mean words burn to ashes, not let them get to you. You're going to meet new people in every phase of your life who are most likely hiding something deep down underneath their cheery attitude and light-up-a-room smile. You most likely are too. There are many ways to let go of what you're still hung up on in the past. Finding a connection with another person who is holding on is bound to do two things: Help you find peace with the past and give you a new best friend.

We all have either a strong desire either to or not to forgive those who haven't exactly been angels to us in the past. For those who don't want to, no matter how much pain people caused you, try to forgive — not for their sake, but for yours. Allowing what that person said to you to play on repeat in your head like a bad song is only going to fill you with anger even more, which is bad for you. Life isn't meant to be spent feeling like nothing in the eyes of others. It's meant to be spent appreciating the memories and adventures you have with those who do love you for who you are.

Words really will try to break you, but in some situations, it's mind over matter. Don't let those words go to your head and bring you down when you know deep down that nothing bad that anyone says about you is truly worth your suffering.

This song does a phenomenal job of turning a good beat and a bad elementary school rhyme into something so incredibly uplifting. Listen to these words carefully and take them to heart.

And please, let those other words burn.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
