13 Songs That Will Turn Your Day Around
Mashable

We've all had our share of challenges and struggles in our lives.

Sometimes they really get us down.

While it's important and completely normal to feel this way, it's equally important to learn to eventually let these feelings go so that we can move on to bigger and better things.

With this in mind, as your resident college radio DJ, I've compiled a list of songs that have done the trick for me.

I hope that you'll be able to say the same!

1. "One Of Those Days" – Joy Williams

If you’ve had “one of those days” where nothing seems to be going right, this song is for you.

You’ll fall in love with the upbeat piano and smoothly wistful lyrics almost immediately. The first line of the song is: “Don’t ask me how I’m doing if you don’t want to know.”

It's so relatable it almost hurts.

2. "Hanginaround" – Counting Crows

Counting Crows are a just a great band, hands down. On the one hand, they have their share of songs that will tug at your heartstrings for when you’re looking for something to relate to. On the other hand, they have their share of fun songs like "Hanginaround."

I could jam to "Hanginaround" all day!

3. "Change of Seasons" – Sweet Thing

Speaking of fun songs … check this one out.

When I heard this song for the first time recently, I never expected to become instantly addicted to it. It’s immediately catchy, and guaranteed to cause you to cast your worries away. In fact, it encourages you to do this repeatedly:

"Baby, don't worry/Just let it go, let it go."

4. "Hand in my Pocket" – Alanis Morisette

This one is a classic. You probably already know this one, and I would be surprised if you didn't.

I am personally a huge fan of Alanis Morisette, her dynamic voice, and her angsty jams. Whenever I have a day that doesn’t go as planned, Hand in My Pocket always reminds me to be grateful for everything I have -- a ritual that I would suggest to anyone.

This song has inspired me to acknowledge the things that aren't going right in my life, before replacing them with the things that are. The underlying message of this song is to focus on the positive, despite our challenges.

I've got one hand in my pocket, and the other one is playing this song 20 times in a row.

5. "The Remedy" – Jason Mraz

While we’re on the subject of classic pump up songs, "The Remedy" by Jason Mraz is headlining this category without argument.

Though it was originally written to a friend who was battling cancer, Mraz inspires all of us to live in the moment and enjoy our lives while we’re still living them. Life is too short to spend the rest of our nights with the light on, worrying, as this song so eloquently reminds us.

Keep this song in mind the next time you find yourself worrying in excess.

6. "Stand Up" – Five For Fighting

With his intricate and often inspirational lyrics, Jon Ondrasik, better known as Five For Fighting, never disappoints. "Stand Up," the first track off of his "Bookmarks" album, is no exception to this rule.

Following a rough day, "Stand Up" is a song that I would play while getting ready for class or work in the morning.

It’s the perfect burst of inspiration to get you going, and not to mention, a great tune to have stuck in your head!

7. "Be Ok" – Ingrid Michaelson

This is an example of a song that is a perfect fit for any time, or any place. Chances are you’ll love this sanguine uke jam no matter who you are. You’ll be singing it for days. It’s just that good.

8. "Grade 9" – Barenaked Ladies

If you’re in need of a goofy song to get your mind off of life’s stressors, look no further. You may even find yourself reminiscing about your "Grade 9" self.

Results may vary. Enough said

9. "If It Makes You Happy" – Sheryl Crow

Sometimes we all feel like we belong a long long way from here.

That’s where Sheryl Crow comes in.

Her songs are not only from the heart, but they also have a way of giving us all the advice that we really need. Sheryl Crow has been through her own share of hardships, which makes it even more incredible that she’ll always be there to help us through ours.

10. "Closer To Fine" – The Indigo Girls

If you’ve never listened to the Indigo Girls, I suggest you do. Right. Now.

Their lyrics and harmonies are out of this world. With many of their songs, they have unknowingly helped me make some much needed sense of the world I’m in and struggles I'm facing.

These girls can hit you right in the feels, in the very best way possible. "Closer to Fine" in particular has taught me a very important lesson: to not take life so seriously. “It’s only life after all.”

11. "Free Me" - Joss Stone

I first heard this song while working a long and tedious shift in a retail store. I used to get extremely excited when this song came back on while I was at work. It immediately brightened up my day.

Not to mention the serious girl power going on.

"Don't tell me that I can't. I can!"

12. "Fly" - Nicki Minaj feat. Rhianna

I am very grateful to Ms. Minaj for putting out a lot of great music, especially "Fly," featuring Rhianna, which I was basically obsessed with in high school. It was one of the few songs I listened to before every softball game. I was a very superstitious pitcher.

I tend to think it worked, but I guess it's all up to interpretation. Instead of crunching the numbers, I'll just be rapping along with the master.

13. "College Kids" – Relient K

I am guilty of blasting this song during nearly every college radio show I host, simply because it’s so darn relatable. It’s basically a list of complaints generated by a frustrated college student. What college student wouldn’t identify with that?

We all need to vent sometimes.

And besides, just like the way my radio slot always flies by, so does the time in college. By the time I graduate, any stressful or bad day will be a distant memory.

But in the mean time, I’m keeping this playlist on repeat.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
