Back in 2007 almost everyone under the age of 20 had a physical diary; a notebook of some kind where they would write down what they did on a certain day, how they feel, anything that came to mind really. But, flash forward ten years, and those diaries have gone digital.
Welcome to the world of finstagram. If you look it up, finstagram stands for “fake Instagram,” but it can also be referred to as a spam or private page.
Most of those who have a finstagram also have a main Instagram account. Most people leave their main account on public, meaning that anyone can see the pictures you post on your page as well as follow you. Finstagrams are almost exclusively set on private, meaning someone has to request to follow you and you have the ability to approve or deny them.
This means that someone’s main account usually has a couple hundred follows, consisting of their friends, family, people from school and some random people who somehow stumbled across your page. If you look at the same person’s finstagram, there is usually less than a hundred followers, made up of only close friends and maybe even a little family.
Your main Instagram account is where you post the cute selfies of you and your friends, the pictures of the food you eat, the pictures of the beach, all of yournice, aesthetically-pleasing pictures. Your finstagram, on the other hand, is where you post the pictures you only want a select few to see.
The pictures aren’t usually what makes a finstagram, though, it’s the caption. The picture may be of just your eye or your bed, but the caption is a paragraph of you venting about your day, complaining about how much homework you have or how much you hate your boss. By controlling who can follow you and making people ask to see what you post, you are picking the audience for your digital diary.
There is also a lot more interaction on a finstagram. Since only those who really care about your life follow your finstagram, they tend to comment on what you post; ask you what’s wrong, respond with their own problems and start a discussion.
Finstagrams allow people to vent about their days in a healthy way. It has the same effect as writing it down in a diary, but allows your close friends to communicate if they feel the need to.
Finstagrams, however, are the next “teen trend” to scare parents. A lot of parents feel the need to micromanage every part of their child’s life and something called “fake Instagram” is scary to them.
Parents think that teenagers are using these accounts to post pictures of themselves drinking, smoking or sexually explicit photos. And, while some teenagers do use these accounts for these things, the majority of teenagers use these accounts to post the pictures of their friends that are too embarrassing to post on their main accounts.
There really is no need for parents to worry about what their teenagers are posting on their finstagrams, as it is just the modern-day diary.
