A few days ago, YouTube channel, FineBros, caused a massive disturbance on the Internet. For those of you who don't know, FineBros is the channel that creates those relatively popular "Kids/Teens/Elders React" videos where people of a certain demographic react to any given media, be it a viral video or a new piece of technology. Anyways, on Jan, 26, FineBros published a video titled "React Around the World."
Seems pretty innocent, right? They just want to spread their series to their audience. However, if you read between the lines a little, there is some sinister implications in their plan.
Firstly, they openly admitted that they're copyrighting "their reaction video" format. Seems innocent enough, if it weren't for the fact they're trying to take down any video that even features kids, teens, or seniors reacting to anything. In return, if any user wanted to create a "react" video, they must pay, FineBros, a cut of the video's revenue or else it will be DMCA'd.
Unsurprisingly enough, the internet isn't taking this well at all and even other YouTubers are speaking up against FineBros.
More information about the potential unethical actions that FineBros is doing can be found in this Reddit comment by /u/Austin_Rivers.
So, what do you think? Is FineBros being ethical? In my humble opinion, the channel is walking down a slippery slope that is easy to fall off of due to greed. Perhaps the scariest part of this affair is that FineBros is attempting to copyright the actual word, "react," meaning that if your YouTube video features the word "react" it would have to go through FineBros' lawyers.
In other news, I have a special announcement! I have been writing articles for The Odyssey for about four months, now. Since I have been at it for a while now, I have decided to copyright the words "article" and "writing" in order to share the goodness of my articles on a global scale.
Also, if you want to write any article that features the words "article" or "writing" legally, you need to pay me -- or else!
