YouTube is ruining itself, did you hear about it?
Shortly after receiving that text from a friend I searched what was happening in the YouTube community and it is not pretty.
YouTube has set up Advertiser-Friendly content guidelines for creators basically censoring anything involving a curse word or an opinion.
To name just a few, there will no longer be: sexually suggestive content, violence, inappropriate language, and controversial or sensitive subjects--including war, politics, natural disasters, and tragedies.
Now I suppose I can understand the sexually suggestive content and maybe the vulgar language, but how are they going to ban controversial topics like war and politics? Why can’t people share their opinions or cover the news; what is so wrong about that?
I am personally scared for the YouTubers I watch and the one’s I haven’t had the pleasure of viewing and might not ever because of this strict censorship.
YouTube creator Philip DeFranco has already been hit twelve times with his videos being taken down because of offensive language and controversial topics. He created a video explaining his frustration on the matter and goes into depth over their new policy which you can watch here.
I’m not sure what will happen with this new policy that YouTube is well within their rights to enforce, but depending on how serious they are about it, here are some of my and hopefully your favorite YouTubers who we may have to say goodbye to, or at least to the vulgarity.
Shane Dawson
Let’s be real, Shane is definitely at the top of the list.
iDubbbzTV
iDubbbz is a definite user of inappropriate language (but it’s charming)
Tyler Oakley
This video covers sensitive subjects and events, which could technically get it taken down. (Please don’t!)
TVFilthyFrank
I mean, if you haven’t seen HAIR CAKE I recommend you watch it with your entire family while eating, it’s very wholesome.
My Drunk Kitchen
Could they take down her videos for promoting drinking and the occasional sensitive subject? No way… right?
Now these are only a few of the channels I hold near and dear to my heart, but there are so many more that stand a chance of being censored. This isn’t to say that all these channels will get censored, but YouTube might be taking a definite turn for creators.
What do you guys think of YouTube’s new policy? Do you think the content will change drastically? Who are you afraid of losing? Maybe this will blow over, but for now the tension is high with the community, and we'll have to wait and see.
