And then it's only appropriate to follow that action with a celebratory "Ballin'".
Let me guess, that unrealistic New Year's resolution slipped out of your hands quicker than a potato when playing hot potato. Yup. There are two types of people in the world: those who can stick to their new year's resolution and those who can't. I will easily go down as a person who has never stuck with new years resolution, in all of my twenty-one years on this planet. My main dilemma is once I tell myself I can't have something (mainly food), every thought reminds me that I am truly missing out (Hello, waffle fries from Chick-fil-a).
So as a twenty-one year old who doesn't have an impressive track record for keeping resolutions, I have decided to come up with five suggestions to spread positivity that won't feel like missing out. (But really, resolution is associated with such negativity...no wonder we can't keep up).
Let's start with the easiest and end with the hardest:
Donate
Your time. Money. Impressive muscles that can easily lift items onto a moving truck.
Agreeing to donate a few items once a month to a donation center will be beneficial to you and the organization you are donating to. Think about that sweater you bought that you will never wear, but "Hey! It was ten bucks". If you give it away, you will never have to look at it again. Deal? (no pun intended)
Pay it Forward
Have you ever been in line when the barista at Starbucks said: "Actually, the person in front paid for your drink"? It is one of the sweetest acts. Maybe you can use that extra change in your coin jar to pay for someone else's drink and they can follow suit. Free coffee for everyone!
Talk on the phone
Remember when your mom forced you to call all of your family members to thank them for sending money with your birthday cards? The sheer terror that appeared on your face. Was it always attached with a "You can't play outside until you call Aunt Susie"? Taking thirty minutes out of your busy week to call Gram and tell her how thankful you are is proven to include many benefits. Especially when she has to choose her favorite grandchild.
Be Present
Presence is a present. ( Who died and made you king? ) Long gone are the days when we could sit and have a conversation without having technology more than a foot away. On the contrary, there are many benefits to stepping away from technology. (aka unplugging) Let's start with an hour a day, and then build up the courage to unplug for a whole day.
Brace yourself for the most difficult.
An Act of Kindness on the weekly.
Negativity kills. Remember that bad day you had two weeks ago? You sat moaning about how unfair life was. And then someone tried to give a piece of advice and your response was "Well, you just don't understand." The one cure didn't even cross your mind, do something nice for someone else. Once a week focus on impacting someone else's day. That is five minutes out of a whole 10,080 you are rewarded a week. Maybe it's every Wednesday offering someone a ride home or giving a nice compliment. And then focus doing it on the daily.
No pain, no gain. But at least this requires less pain than the typical eating healthy and working out.
