There Is Quite The Variety Of Things That You Can Find

Finding Interesting Things In The Woods

Working in the woods with my dad, a Maine forester, you find a lot of odds and ends. Some are useful items that you can bring home while others, not so much.

One of the biggest things is the moose antlers. If you are in a good area, you can find multiple! The best time to find these are in the spring, right after the snow goes, but before the leaves grow. They can be really nice antlers, brown, a recent drop, no chewed ends, or you may find one that's been there a couple years and has been chewed to pieces. Either way, you can either keep them as decoration or a dog chew or sell them. Moose antlers bring in good money.

Along well-traveled roads and snowmobile/ATV trails, there is a good chance that you will find some cans. Just over the past couple years I have worked in the woods, we have found hundreds. Mostly, they are beer cans. The trash along these routes is pretty hefty too. Occasionally, my dad has found parts of snowmobiles, and in the past year, a phone and a GPS.

Speaking of trash, we often times will find deflated balloons here and there throughout the woods. These, my dad calls "long distance littering" since they have to come from far away.

Even though they are not really trash, every now and again there may be an old car lying around. People used to just dump their trash in the woods, and the cars are a good sign of that. There's even one out in the forest behind my own house!

A few years ago, my dad brought home an old soccer ball. He found it in the middle of the woods. When he saw that it was still in a good condition, he decided to bring it home for me to play with. I still have it and it still is in pretty good condition. He's found a couple other balls, not many are in as good of condition.

We have two green, plastic chairs at our house, currently sitting out on our deck. Both of those my dad found in the woods, too. Just rereading this article makes me think that our house is going to be filled with items just from the woods. I promise it's not.

The most recent find was a deer stand. Well, they've been found before, abandoned, left out in the middle of the woods, but it was just a few weeks ago that Dad finally decided to bring one home.

And even so, these are just some of the things that can be found out in the woods. Take a walk sometime, you never know what you might find!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
