Music has a funny way of defining our lives. For every breathtaking moment we live, there's a song for it. There's a chance a song was playing at that specific, outstanding moment in time. You're forever tied to that moment through a song. When it's played you are thrust back in time and you can feel everything you felt when that moment first happened. But maybe it wasn't playing during one of life's precious moments. Maybe you stumbled upon the tune later in life. However you have tied the memory to the song, as soon as the first beat plays, you're instantly back in that insane, life changing moment. Music has a way of happening at the right place and the right time; creating a magical life moment.
The beauty of music is that there is no limitation on the meaning, sound or purpose of a single song. A sound has been found for every emotion. Music provides us with the power to reminisce the good, the bad and the ugly through a simple tune. Our favorite, most joyous memories can be found in completely different songs than our saddest and most difficult memories. But I can't speak for everyone. As unique as we are to each other, so are our memories. Which is why certain songs can mean different things to different people, which is really cool.
For example, "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter could remind you of American Idol when someone got voted off back in the day but for me, it means something else. Taking the loss, or 'L' on a stressful rainy day and blasting "Bad Day" to push through it is what that song means to me. As soon as I thought of "Bad Day" I smiled, I can just picture myself blasting that through my car speaker's on the world's shittiest day and getting through it because of that song. While some songs may speak to us to remind us of specific memories, others are meant to push us through life's toughest and greatest moments.
Whatever music speaks to you, what tunes help ease the pain, which songs bring a smile to your face are vital to finding your true self. Finding what music speaks to you will change your life. The more music we indulge in, the more we reveal what makes us tick towards happiness or soothe us through sadness. If there is a constant flow of music in one ear and out through the other, we can find ourselves. As we engage our brains in music that speaks to us, the deeper we go in discovering ourselves.
Music is able to give us wisdom and understanding by teaching us who we are through lyrics and sound. Music is able to give us a feeling of clarity that we can't find many other places. There is a journey that comes with falling in love with a song, then discovering a genre, growing close to a certain band and exploring the experiences that surround 'your' music. Falling in love with music is an unexplainable feeling that can help you piece together the loose strings of your being. As you dive head first into the details of a new album, you are giving yourself the tools to get through the good, the bad and the ugly. When you can't help but listen to a band on repeat, you have found a friend you can confide in without their judgment.
In your lifetime, you will grow with an artist that fits into your life seamlessly. You will find your favorite memories are in the crowd of their concert and in your own company listening to their songs. This music becomes a part of who you are. Until you unlock the mysteries of your music, you have not fully found yourself. But with your favorite song, you will find the missing pieces of yourself that you may not have found otherwise. Just like your favorite memories, these songs come to you when you least expect them. So start finding yourself. Find your music and let it guide you to your life's most beautiful moments.
