Recently, I've been struggling with a terrible bout of depression.
It's hard to come out of the haze when you're in it. But, one thing that never fails to lighten my spirits is Peter Pan. Not the Disney version or the one with Jeremy Sumpter -- the little blonde kid we all had a crush on in 2003? Yeah. It's the original book.
I picked up a special edition a few months back and It's already become something I want to hand down to my kids. It has little pages that are special - one shows the inner workings of a kids mind and how a mother must tidy it up while they're asleep. One has a map of Neverland. It's all very interesting and special.
I got a tattoo of the second star to the right behind my ear a few years ago. It's my favorite tattoo so far, because it always reminds me to think of Neverland when I'm upset.
'It's an escape where you don't have to worry. Peter Pan may be a dark book, but something always stuck with me -- Neverland is different for every single child who visits. It's whatever you want it to be. I like that idea -- of everyone having a special place to escape to when they need it. It's safe and comforting and something everyone needs. So go figure out what your Neverland would look like. What would you five-year-old self want to see? Mine involves a lot of mermaids -- but maybe not the ones that want to drown you.
