To Find The Peace You Seek, Start With Yourself

A few years ago for Christmas my beautiful mother gave me a brass cuff bracelet. Etched into the cuff reads a phrase I whisper to myself daily whether I am wearing the bracelet or not:

"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."

I stumbled upon this powerful phrase while dealing with the deepest depression I've experienced and several years later still helps me with the adversity of life. This phrase comes from the last line of poet William Ernest Henley's most famous work and has been an inspiration to self-mastery for many (Nelson Mandela would recite this to other prisoners while he was incarcerated at Robben Island).

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

The way we manage ourselves greatly impacts those around us, but it impacts our well being even more. Allowing myself to believe in this power I have over myself has made me unbearably in love with my life and my soul.

Uncertainty of the future does not extinguish the light ahead.

A backwards step does not disqualify us from the race.

Pausing to rest does not make us weak.

Confidence does not guarantee security.

True happiness does not dwell in being right, it dwells within.

If you are pleased or disappointed in the presidential election outcome last week please remember that we all have work to do for the future of our country, starting with ourselves.

If you are dealing with depression, anxiety or anything that makes you feel helpless, you aren't alone and you can regain peace.

If the world around you seems to be falling away from you know that your soul is untouchable by the chaos surrounding you.

You are unconquerable despite whatever is happening around you. Find peace in knowing you are the master of your fate and the captain of your soul.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
