If there is one thing I learned in high school it's to find people who make you smile. Find people you find yourself genuinely happy around. Find people that when they crack a joke you can't help but laugh.
Life is too short to be around people that drag you down and make you unhappy; I've learned that one the hard way. I surrounded myself with people who I knew didn't really want me around and it took me a long time to become strong enough to see that and to put my foot down. I was going to find people who made me smile and wanted me around.
Since then I've found the best people I could have in my life. They make me laugh until I cry. They make me smile until my cheeks hurt. I've found myself more comfortable with myself and with being myself around them. My friends have done more for me than anyone could ever know and I could never be more grateful.
There are people out there who are friends with the wrong people because they're afraid they won't find other friends if they walk away. There are people out there who are friends with the wrong people because they want to be popular and with the "in crowd". There are people out there friends with the wrong people because they don't recognize these "friends" are bringing them down the most. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am that I am not one of those people, how relieved I am to have people to call true friends.
So if I could offer up one piece of advice to anyone struggling with this: find people who make you smile, laugh, and feel loved because you deserve to be surrounded by people that do nothing but uplift you.
