Bid day can be extremely awkward, and it may leave a few women and men who are new to the Greek system wondering if they have made the right choice. Although the transition from not being in a Greek chapter to being a new member may be overwhelming, here are a few tips to get the most out of being involved in Greek life.
Attend everything possible
Once you join a chapter, your agenda can become filled with an endless number of events, if you put yourself out there. From sisterhoods and brotherhoods, philanthropies to semester formals, there is hardly a week that goes by without some way to become involved. Without attending any of these events, you miss out on the majority of great chances to bond with members you'll be with for the next four years. I mean, if you don't attend these events, it's like you're paying dues for no reason, since you may not be making any long-lasting connections you thought you would get.
Live in the house
After this semester is over, I will have lived in my sorority house for the past year and a half. I've lived with my own pledge class, and this semester I live with our sophomore pledge class. I, for one, can say that living in helps you become more connected with everyone in your sorority. If I didn't live in, there is no way I would be so close to so many people in my sorority.
You are with your sisters every living and breathing part of the day. They're the ones you rehash your odd nights out with and they're the ones who are always there when you need to vent about accidentally double-tapping your rush crush's Instagram from 227 weeks ago. Regardless of how different you feel, you joined the same Greek chapter for a reason, and living in really helps you realize why.
Run for a position
Although I have never done this, I have considered it before. Running for a position can be a huge time commitment, but I've heard it's extremely rewarding. Obviously, assuming the position of president will take more time and dedication than other leadership options. My advice to you is to find something you're interested in and feel you'd be great at. If you like planning events and being active in the social scene, try running for social chair. If you're like me and enjoy doing public relations-type tasks, look for a communications position.
Put in effort
You know the saying, "You get what you give"? Well, it's true in the case of joining Greek life. If you don't try to make the most of it, you won't enjoy it as much as you could. When you don't put yourself out there, you will have a hard time meeting friends and making those connections we become Greek to find. If you actually try to make it an influential and positive part of your life, it will be. It can change your life for the better if you allow it to and put in the work to reap the rewards.
