I’m lucky. I got the chance to see my favorite band live before I even knew they were my favorite band. In 2013, my father got my friend and I tickets to see Fall Out Boy on their comeback tour. Twenty One Pilots was the opening band, and though I had never heard of them, I gave them a try.
I hated them.
I didn’t like how whiny his voice was. The lyrics were just too sad. And what kind of genre is it anyway? I kept trying, though because people seemed to really love them. By the time I got to see them live, they were officially my all-time favorite band, taking over long time favorite, The Killers.
We had some of the worst seats at the show, but it is something I look back on fondly.
After seeing them once, I quickly became attached and have seen them three other times since then. There’s something euphoric about seeing your favorite band live, and it’s something I never get bored of.
So, my advice for anyone who hasn’t seen their favorite band live: do it! Go. See them. It’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Why? Because it’s one of the only things that brings people pure joy. For a whole two hours, you are going to enjoy your favorite band with a bunch of people who also enjoy that music. No one there is going to judge you. Everyone just wants to have a good time.
Concerts bring along a careless feeling with them, a feeling where you can just forget about any and all responsibilities. It’s a moment one can enjoy with others. There’s too much chaos in life. There are too many things to be mad or angry about. So when you’re presented with an opportunity to forget it, it’s something everyone would take.
Seeing your favorite band live, especially for the first time, presents you with this tangible person. Before, they were merely a concept in your head, someone that seemed far away. These people (or person) are suddenly right in front of you. In this manner, they get to perform their music how it’s meant to be performed, which is not always how it was recorded. Some artists have stage acts, they bring along dancers and flashy lights, all to add to the music. They now have the creative freedom to choose how you now see the song.
Going to concerts is one of my favorite hobbies, no matter how expensive it can be. But I will never, ever get tired of seeing my favorite bands live. There is something so carefree about the atmosphere, something so great in making new friends from all over, connecting over music.
The last time I saw my favorite band was roughly two months ago. Now, I am currently working on seeing them for the fifth time this summer. Seeing Twenty One Pilots live is my all-time favorite thing to do in the world. So if you ever get the chance to see your favorite band live, I recommend that you do. Very few things in life can provide so much joy in people around the world.
