It seems like every day there’s a new dating app, all of them boasting about potential love interests, but actually resulting in creepy convos (ahem, Tinder…) How many dating apps are actually worth downloading, and how many actually produce real results?
I present to you a guide of some of the most popular dating apps out there that AREN’T Tinder. Go ahead, say goodbye to creepy convos, and start swiping!
Bumble
Specifically designed to prevent unwanted messages from potential creepers that you might find on alternative apps, Bumble lets the girl take control. Men are not allowed to initiate conversations, cutting down on unwelcome advances and allowing women to feel confident with making the first move. Whitney Wolfe, founder of the app, designed Bumble after experiencing some personal issues with Tinder.
In Time Magazine, Wolfe states her belief that, “This [Bumble] isn’t a dating app, it’s a movement. This could change the way women and men treat each other.”
Plus, how easy would it be to match with someone instead of stalking them to get their number on Win? Oh, and to make this awesome app even better, Bumble has recently paired up with Snapchat, presenting a new buzzworthy filter every day to grab people’s attention and get them to download!

Hinge
Hinge connects to your Facebook to find matches that aren’t necessarily strangers. By connecting with mutual friends, you can feel assured that these are people you can trust. Unlike other dating apps, Hinge only gives you a select number of matches, so you’re less overwhelmed with the potential dating pool.
Founder and CEO of Hinge, Justin McCleod, says the main difference between Hinge and other dating apps is that it is “a way to meet people rather than a game to play with.”
Sounds pretty classy, right? While it’s currently not available in Winston-Salem, Hinge has already reached over 35,500 dates a week in big cities.
OkCupid
This app is a little more complicated than the previous two, as it is presented as more of a dating site than maintaining a simple “Swipe Right, Swipe Left” mentality. However, it has such a wide group of people to choose from and offers more in-depth profiles than other dating apps.
Once you double click on someone’s profile and “like” them, you have the opportunity to answer a plethora of questions initiated by that person. While it’s more designed for finding a real relationship other than a simple fling, it still has a Tinder-like feature called “Quickmatch” where you can swipe through people nearby. Therefore, this is last on the list, as it still leaves room for potentially unsolicited comments.
Bottom line: do not be ashamed of using dating apps. Each of these offers plenty of opportunities to meet new people, even right on Wake’s small campus. We all know you have that crush that you’re too scared to approach in person…
So, don’t be scared to swipe right – who knows what could happen!
