Nothing says "Happy October" like fall break. Every year, fall break happens to come around at just the right time. Here are my five phases of going home for break. Happy Fall!
1. The “I can't wait to go home” phase
The week before fall break is always the worst. It’s the time when you have midterms in four classes, a paper, a presentation, and lord know what else due all in one week. By the time you make it out of midterms week, you can’t wait to just go home and relax. For me, fall break has always come just at the perfect time when I'm stressed and ready to go home for a couple days. It’s also the time of the year when you need just that little break from your roommates/friends at school. It's not that you don’t love them, but being with somebody 24/7 can get a little exhausting.
2. The “I'm home!” phase
This phase consists of nothing but eat, sleep, and repeat. The moment I walk into my house, I put on my pajamas, lay in my bed, and sleep. Nothing says welcome home like your bed. After you sleep half your day away, it's time for the best part of being home: the food. This may not be true for everyone, but I crave anything my mom or dad makes when I’m at school. It’s the best feeling to come home to a cooked meal, your own bed, and the scent of your home.
3. The “family time/catch up” phase
After sleep and food comes the good ol' family catch up. For the most part, you probably haven’t seen your family since August, so the list of things to talk about is infinite. You need to get the gossip catch up from your mom, the sports update from your dad, and the school down low from your siblings. Once you do the catching up, it's back to the family bonding which could consist of watching Netflix, going apple picking, shopping, or all of the above.
4. The “I’m still in school” phase
It doesn’t take too long into fall break for you to get caught up on your home life, but then realize that you’re still in school. You forget that you have a few assignments, reading, and even a couple of tests when you get back from break. But trying to work on schoolwork in your house during break is not as easy as you think it would be. You probably brought every book you own and plan on doing everything at home, but most of the time, you go back to school with nothing done.
5. The “It's time to go back” phase
Fall break is a great two-day break to relax and catch up with family and friends from home. But after a couple days and a weekend, you realize it's time to go back to your other home: school. Plus, you’re ready to catch up with your friends who you haven’t seen in three days, but feels like 10 years. As much as you love your family and house, nothing can quite match your life at school.
