They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Sappy, I know, but it is something I believe in. The eyes are among my favorite things in this world.
All too often we have to put on an act or a mask when we are around people. I have found, however, that it is extremely difficult to fake emotions on your face above your nose. When you really see someone's eyes, how they look at you, how their eyebrows are set, how open they are, that is when you can see and feel their real emotions. There are so many times when the eyes tell so much more than words can. The way someone looks at someone they love while that loved one is talking to them. Those eyes hold so much wonder, so much adoration, and so much joy. The way someone looks at you when they are talking about a loved one or about something that really excites them. It's as though you can feel their heart racing from across a distance, all because their eyes opened up and are happy as can be. The way someone's eyes seem to shine the moment they show you a beautiful, genuine smile. Then there is the way eyes hold so much heavy sadness, even hidden behind a smile. The way our eyes can look tired, weary, upset, or frustrated. Eye contact holds so much truth that we do not often acknowledge because we are not really looking at someone when we are with them.
Many of us are fixated on the color of our eyes. We wish our eyes looked different; blue or green or maybe even all black, for some reason. To me, the real beauty is not in how the eyes were designed, but in how you design them with the real you: how you feel. The most beautiful eyes I have ever seen belong to the most all-around beautiful people I have known. They have questioned what I find so special in "just eyes," but really it is them that I value. I treasure those moments when eye contact is extended for just a bit longer.
As silly as this is, I have even done this with animals and found it to be a positive experience. One of my favorites is with dogs. For dogs, humans are almighty. Their love can have no bounds. I have seen dogs look at owners with the same amount of adoration as I have seen someone in love look at their significant other. Dogs and cats love to stare. They love to share a moment with you just by looking at you. They love just being there with you. Maybe we should take something from that and learn to slow down and just love who we are with because they are with us, in that moment.
Beauty comes in many forms. Sure, you can define beauty for yourself. For me, the inner beauty as seen through the eyes is one of the purest.
