Back in 1999, in a Japanese Research Facility, the emoji was born. Long since their creation, emojis have come to serve not only as a universal communication tool but also as a unique form of expression for our generation.
Only the click of a button and a few swipes away, we can now select from hundreds of minuscule picture icons to bring our texts to life. Certain emojis even have meaning in stand-alone texts—it's a widely known fact for all iPhone users what the sender is trying to tell you if you receive a 😡, 😈, or a 👍.
It could be argued that these character sets speak to our cultures as a whole. Emoji-usage studies show that Americans lead the world in💰,🍕, & 🏀 symbols. The French, consistent with their romantic stereotype send four times as many 💗 emoji's than any other country. Australians, on the other hand take the 🍰 in the utilization of vices such as 🍻 & 💊 .
Apple's recent release of their racially diverse emojis took the concept of these picture icons a step further, proving how prominent they've become in society. When's the last time you sent a text message without a little praying hand symbol 🙏 when you asked someone for a favor? Emojis have truly begun to break down all cultural and language barriers. They have created a global medium for communicating, functioning as a gateway for personal expression via our most prized possessions, our cell phones.
The emoji trend creates a huge opportunity for business ventures, one that three entrepreneurs from FSU and FAMU decided to take advantage of. Ben Frost and Alex Smith, students at Florida State, along with the help of a brand strategist, Markel Mazelin, a current student at FAMU and founder of MeetTheMark, have joined forces to create EmojiCase. They began with one goal in mind—to create a unique high-quality phone case that gives you the ability to express yourself.
Their idea for the product stemmed from increased awareness to just how often emojis pop up in daily conversation, on apparel, tattoos, and countless other facets of life. Frost, Smith, and Mazelin employed our society's cell phone infatuation in addition to the emotional connection that people have developed with Emojis, and voila--EmojiCase. An EmojiCase, pictured below, combines impact technology with expressive design and allows you to convert your favorite emoji into a cell phone accessory. Frost and Smith have already received heavy interest from major South American cellular distribution chains, and are currently working on solidifying contracts to transfer thousands of cases to their stores.
How it works—you simply select your favorite emoji, it gets 3D printed onto an unbreakable phone case, and a beautifully packaged EmojiCase arrives on your doorstep.
