During winter break, I was lucky enough to visit another wonderful country called Australia! It is also known as “Down Under.” The best experience I had besides visiting family was learning the different terminology. While there, I discovered there is a lot of terminology that might seem strange or very different than what you are used to hearing. Below, I have listed words that are used in Australia and their American definitions.

  1. Thongs - flip flop’s
  2. Arvo - afternoon
  3. Tinnies - cans of beer
  4. Three hairs past the freckle - 3 o’clock
  5. Cuppa - cup of tea
  6. Send the parcel - go to the bathroom (#2)
  7. Chips - French fries
  8. Budgie smugglers - Speedo
  9. Mossie - mosquito
  10. Grog - alcoholic drink
  11. Cossie - a bathing suit
  12. Yank Tank - big American cars
  13. Prawns - shrimps
  14. Sloppy Joe - sweatshirt
  15. Duna - comforter
  16. Idiot Box - television
  17. Capsicum - peppers
  18. Rock Melon - cantaloupe
  19. Singlet - tank top
  20. G’day - good day
  21. Mate - a pal
  22. Happy As Larry - very happy
  23. Bloke - male
  24. Good On Ya - well done
  25. Bob’s Your Uncle - job’s done
  26. Servo - service station
  27. Rippa - great
  28. Take The Mickey Out Of Ya - make fun of you
  29. Booting - vomiting
  30. On The Pine - on the sideline
  31. Smoko - lunch break
  32. Dodgy - sketchy
  33. Chippy - carpenter
  34. Breaky - breakfast
  35. Wally - an idiot
  36. Bend The Elbow - have a beer
  37. Foot Path - sidewalk
  38. Doco - documentary
  39. Stoked - very pleased
  40. Durry - cigarette
  41. Cheeky Bugga - someone who is up to no good
  42. Tomato Sauce - ketchup
  43. Torch - flashlight
  44. Macca's - McDonald's
  45. Oz - Australia

After reviewing this list, it is visible that Aussie slang is much different than what you may normally hear. To be honest, sometimes it sounds as if they are speaking a different language, but it is quite interesting to hear certain slang terms and then hear what they actually mean. During this trip, I found myself using some of the slang such as "the mossies are eating me alive," which simply means "I am being bitten by mosquitoes." I reckon using Aussie slang because it makes casual conversation more interesting.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
