Fall break is a short, two-day, technically four with the weekend, break that my college gives its students so that they can have a little bit of time away from the mayhem that is first semester. Last year, I had to stay at the college over this break because I live two plane rides away from home. Since I’m a huge extrovert, I wasn’t a fan of this. A lot of people might feel like getting to be away from college kids for a few days and be in the comfort of silence would be nice. Not me. I felt extremely lonely when none of my friends were around.
This time, however, I did not have to have that experience. My best friend Casey invited me to stay with her. I gladly accepted, so that I wouldn’t have to stay at an empty campus alone. Also for the fact that I thought it would be fun.
I’ve only been here for two days and three nights, but so far it’s been wonderful. It’s like I get to go on a nice little getaway for a few days and for her she’s just going home, to the place where she’s always been. She made me breakfast the first day, an omelet and a bagel, which are two of my favorite breakfast foods. Then she and her dad took me to see a comedy show, which was a new experience for me. I absolutely loved it.
I was way too excited for what we did today though. We took a train into New York City! This is a bigger deal for me than it is for her because where I’m from is nowhere near New York City so I never go there because it would be way too expensive. We just spent the day, but we had a wonderful breakfast at a diner and then we walked around, went to the Disney store, went to the MoMA, got lunch and went to central park. It was great to be in the city for a while.
We still have about a day and a half left, but as for tomorrow we’re going to pick pumpkins which is great because I love them and the idea of Halloween coming up is very exciting to me. Then she might take me around the mall. We’re unsure of our Sunday plans.
The reason I wanted to write this article is to share the fact that I love getting to see other people’s walks of life. Before going to someone’s house, I actually kind of have a preconceived idea of what it might look like. This is never usually how their house looks though. It’s not like I’m expecting them to live in some huge mansion because I don’t think that’s what makes a home nice. I just have an idea for some reason of what I think the house might look like based on who they are. Like I said, it’s usually never right. My friend lives in a lovely home with a great family and I have personally enjoyed staying here. I think it’s interesting to see what her high school looks like and the delicious food she gets to eat in her hometown. I think I’ll always enjoy getting to know what people’s lives are like. Especially when it’s a close friend. Not only did I avoid spending break alone but I also got to see how one of my best friend’s grew up and basically what makes her who she is.
