Summer is the greatest time of year! No classes, no alarms, no responsibilities...what isn't to love about summer?! Yeah right! Maybe those are your summer expectations but you're about to get a loud wake up call from reality (and your alarm!)
Number 1:
Expectation: Fun in the sun!
Laying out all day, soaking up the rays, getting a tan, living the dream!
Reality: Work and school.
Working 8 hours a day because hashtag college student, gotta pay off that debt and work as many hours as possible so you don't go further in debt. Plus taking summer classes at your local community college because it's cheaper than the university so not only class time but also homework time. By the time you're ready to relax the sun has set and it's time for bed!
Number 2:
Expectation: Perfect tan
Laying out is great! A nice natural tan, the feeling of the sun soaking into your skin, spending all day being lazy and just laying in the sun sounds perfect, doesn't it?
Reality: Farmers tan
Yeah try again. More like getting a farmer's tan from wearing your work polo outside. Waiting at the bus stop, walking around work, or even having to do work outside, there's no escape from the awful farmer's tan you're in for.
Number 3:
Expectation: Awesome vacations
Paris, Rome, Italy, Australia, Jamaica, where are you going to travel this summer?! The goal is to fill your passport up and make as many memories as possible. You HAVE to have the greatest summer vacation story to tell when you get back to school!
Reality: Visiting grandma
Vacation is far away, requires time off from work, and is expensive. The only vacation you're taking is a 20 minute road trip to grandma's house. It may not be Italy but the food is still delicious!
Number 4:
Expectation: No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks
When you were little the best part of summer was no more school! You didn't have to turn papers in or sit at a desk or be responsible for any sort of academic work.
Reality: Summer classes
When you get older summer is different. Summer becomes the time where you can see how many classes you can fit into one summer. Online classes, hybrid, or in person...there's so many different ways to learn and they all require homework!
Number 5:
Expectation: No alarm
Summer vacation means turning off all your alarms and sleeping in as late as you want. Waking up naturally to your fan blowing and the birds chirping....
Reality: 6am every weekday!
There is nothing more irritating than being woken up from a wonderful dream by your screeching alarm clock. 6am rolls around and it's time to get up! You've got a long day ahead of you filled with work, classes, and homework.
The realities of summer have me questioning why I ever wanted to be an adult!
