You know that feeling of complete and utter joy you get when you see someone who means a lot to you? It’s something you only feel around a select few people, and they’re always very special to you. The people who give you that feeling are the people whose influence on your life is good for your soul, and your grandma is definitely one them. If your grandma is anything like mine, she spends her days brightening the smiles on the faces of the people around her. She’s got a positive outlook on life, and she only wants what’s best for you. She’ll cheer you up when you’re feeling down, and she’ll make you laugh when you want to cry. So, next time you visit grandma and grandpa’s, show grandma some love and appreciation, because she does a lot for you and your soul.
Here are a few of the many, many reasons why visiting grandma is good for your soul:1. Comfort foods galore.
I always make the comment that I'm going to gain 500 pounds after a visit to my grandparents' house, but the truth is that it doesn't matter. She may make an abundance of homemade foods and I may stuff my face, but, no matter how tight my pants are when I leave her house, I always find a sense of comfort in her cooking.
2. Endless compliments.
I can always count on leaving my Grandy's house feeling like a million bucks. She realizes that it's the little things that matter. Whether she's telling me that I have legs pretty enough to not have to wear pantyhose or that my hair smells good, she never fails to put a smile on my face.
3. Wisdom only age can give.
No matter the scenario, Grandy always has an answer. She's been around a while (you wouldn't know that from looking at her, though), and she's seen a lot. She may not understand things about my generation, but she has a solution for a majority of the things I'm going through.
4. Phrases that bring a smile to your face.
Maybe this is something only my grandma does, but she's always coming up with or saying these phrases that make me smile. She recently made the comment about a picture of my grandparents riding a four wheeler that they plan to, "Wear out, not rust out."
5. Embarrassing stories about your parent.
It never fails that I learn something new about my father after each and every visit with my grandma. My most recent visit somehow enticed a story about my father bringing home an animal in his lunch box when he was six years old. It's safe to say I get a decent ab work out in from all the laughing that results from these stories.
6. You'll leave feeling tech savvy.
I couldn't tell you how many times I've taught her how to upload pictures to Facebook, though I'm happy to do it each and every time. I always leave feeling like I could hack into the Pentagon's security system (okay, maybe not that tech savvy).
7. Being cold is never an issue.
I can't count on my fingers and toes how many knitted scarves, sweaters, hats, and socks I own. What I can tell you is that, when I put them on, they keep me warm on the outside, and they warm my heart on the inside.
8. Old relatives are never forgotten.
Musty smells and worn out pictures are ever present. We have albums and albums of pictures of people I have never and will never meet, but I know what they look like.
9. Hope that true love still exists.
Every time I see the way my grandma looks at my grandpa, or vice versa, I feel a little tug at my heart strings. Growing up in a hook-up (Netflix and chill) generation is hard, but seeing that, over fifty years later, they still look at each other with love in their eyes gives me hope that true love still exists.
10. Remembering the importance of family time.
It's easy to get lost in the mayhem of life, but grandma will sit you down and remind you how important it is to make time for family. Every time we visit, we always make time to play games. Families that play together stay together.
11. Most importantly, there's never a shortage of love.
I can always count on my grandma for a hug if I need it. Whether we're having a heart to heart or just sitting in silence, she radiates a kind of love only grandmas can.
Quick bonus for my maternal grandma:
WreslteMania marathons can be good for the soul, too.
