Evolution Of Summer

The emotional roller coaster from May to August.

Evolution Of Summer
Alyssa Nevergold

Every year we all go through the same emotions regarding summer, especially as a college student these three months are a bittersweet emotional roller coaster. The time away from school, friends and your new home can be agonizing. But the thought of returning to those dreaded lectures makes you want to cry. Throughout the weeks of fun in the sun we go through the motions, making this the evolution of summer.

Finals week:

You are probably tired, angry, frustrated and probably hungry. You are wishing that you would have done better at the beginning of the semester so you did not have to study so much now. But you are hopeful because summer is right around the corner.

Last day of school:

This is the most stressful but most exciting time of summer. You only have that one final left that you have been studying for, for over a month now. As you finish the last question and walk out of the lecture hall a million pounds has been lifted off your shoulders.

End of May:

The first part of the summer is always fun but rainy. You are wanting to be free and be outdoors but of course the rain hinders that happiness.

Final grades are released:

A low point of summer, when your final grades are released and sent home to your parents. A time to celebrate or hide from the wrath that is about to be released. I thought summer was supposed to be your escape from lectures?

It finally feels like summer:

June and July comes along and it finally starts feeling like summer. You are tan and have that rocking summer bod. This is the time for the pool, fireworks, and bonfires.

When the heat is too much:

Once late July and August hits the heat begins to feel like too much and you are tired of melting everyday and watching your electric bill go through the roof. This is also the time when your professors for fall semester start to email you to remind you about the $400 books you will never use that you need.

Moving season:

Once August hits, the town starts to fill up with the college students. Orientations are over, your lease has ended and it is time to move onto the next dorm, apartment, or house.

School:

School starts again at the end of August and the temperatures start to drop and you wonder why you ever wished for the heat to go away. But you are happy because you are back with your friends and one step closer to graduation day.

Summer may bring a lot of emotions but the evolution always is a cycle. As this summer comes to an end and school is starting back up we will remember the summer of 2016 and countdown to next year.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
