Everyone Needs To Relax About Christmas

I'm not the Grinch, but I'm no Kris Kringle.

Everyone Needs To Relax About Christmas

Christmas used to be my favorite holiday. I couldn’t wait to wake my parents up at the crack of dawn to go open the presents that Santa had brought me the night before. I loved helping my mom cook Christmas dinner and would anxiously wait for the rest of my family to get to our house to celebrate. Somewhere along the road, though, I began to enjoy Christmas less and less. Now, I can barely stand it.

My friends tell me that I’m a heartless witch when they hear that I don’t enjoy the best day of the year. They think I don’t have a soul and hate everything that causes happiness. That’s actually the furthest thing from the truth – I just hate everything that Christmas has become.

I hate that stores put up decorations and begin advertising on November 1st. Halloween literally just ended, there’s no need for all of that. I feel the need to bring my earphones with me when I go out because I can’t stand listening to “A Holly Jolly Christmas” or “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” a hundred times a week.

I hate that Black Friday sales start on Thursday. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a holiday all about family, spent together around the television while we all watch football with our stomachs full of turkey and stuffing. Instead, we’re rushing through dinner so that we can go stand in the cold for hours in order to get the biggest television at Best Buy or the newest video game at Toys R Us.

Maybe it’s just my mother, but she gets very stressed during this holiday season. She always feels the need to buy expensive presents for everyone we know. She has to get more than she did last year, whether it’s for me, my sister or anyone in the family. Shopping means going out as soon as she gets home from work and not getting back until it’s pitch black out, sometimes after midnight. The whole time she’s yelling at people for taking her parking spot, for taking too long at the registers or for buying the last pair of gloves she wanted for my father.

I don’t think I’d mind so much if Christmas didn’t start as soon as Halloween ended. If decorations went up and songs started playing on December 1st, I’d be okay. If ABC Family didn’t have a countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas, I might enjoy holiday movies. If giving one homemade, heartfelt present was enough, I'd be happy. I don't need much so I never feel the need to give much, but I know that's not what is expected.

If you're one of those people who starts celebrating on November 1st, know that I don't hate you. If you can enjoy all of those things for two months, props to you. Just please don't get mad when people like me tell you we don't like Christmas. We have our reasons.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
