It's that time of year again. We're in the homestretch of the semester, the weather is getting progressively nicer each day, and the daydreams of what we're all going to do this summer have started.
The idea of summer and going to the beach and getting a nice tan is on everyone's mind right now. Getting the ideal "summer body" is something a lot of people are also thinking about.
I've heard one too many people say things like, "Oh I'm dieting this week, gotta get that summer bod!" or "I'm just not going to eat certain foods so I can get ready for the summer". TV ads are advertising their weight loss products by saying "Want to get that summer body in just x amount of days?".
What I don't understand is, why do we need to get a summer body? It's okay to want to lose weight and be healthy but that's just it, be healthy. I'm not here to tell you what to do but I am here to tell you that your body is already a summer body.
Our society has told us that each summer season we need to lose weight so we can look good at the beach. But as long as you're healthy, why does it matter? Your body is yours and no one should tell you that your body isn't good enough.
We always talk about weight loss as if it's something that can happen in a week. Ads say all the time, "Lose 20 pounds in seven days!" But that's scientifically proven to not be healthy at all. Weight loss isn't something that should happen in the blink of an eye. It's said that we're supposed to lose one to two pounds a week.
I feel like the most common way people try to get that "summer body" is by eliminating carbs altogether. Ask any doctor though and they'll tell you that's not really the way to do. We literally need carbs to function. They shouldn't be eliminated completely. It's one thing to cut back because let's be real, we're all bread-o-holics at heart, but taking carbs completely out of our diet is dangerous.
Like I said, I'm not here to tell you how to live your life, I'm here to tell you you're amazing and beautiful the way you are.
Whether you're a guy or a girl, I promise, you already have a summer body. The point of the summer is to have fun and bask in the nice weather. Shouldn't we do that instead of worry whether or not society is willing to accept our bodies?
