Ever since I was introduced to the Enneagram by my friends it has completely changed my life. If you don't know what the Enneagram is, its a personality test. The Enneagram Institue explains more by saying, "The Enneagram can be seen as a set of nine distinct personality types, with each number on the Enneagram denoting one type. It is common to find a little of yourself in all nine of the types, although one of them should stand out as being closest to yourself. This is your basic personality type."
After researching the 9 different types I came to the conclusion that I most resonate with being a 6 on the Enneagram. I tend to overthink and my core fear is fear itself. Or in other words, the unknown. This stereotypically makes 6's the most fearful of the enneagram types. We have trouble trusting ourselves and continuously look for others to reassure us. Personally, I tend to do this through asking others their opinions and forming a conclusion around that. (I'm a follower I know) For example, if I go to eat out with friends I cannot be the person to chose the restaurant, because it gives me so much unneeded anxiety. Constant thoughts of "What if no one likes the restaurant?" or "If nobody likes it then you'll never be able to choose another place again!" flood my mind. The stress is too much to handle so most of the time, I just ask around, and whatever opinion is most popular I just go along with.
Sixes are known to hold A LOT of anxiety and because of this our basic desire in life is to have security and support from others. Not saying I can't live my life without copious amounts of friendships and constant reassurance from my peers. On the contrary, I actually despise authority and resist anyone making decisions for me. If I have anxieties over something, I tend to overthink until my brain hurts and then consult with another person to see both sides. I tend to relate more on my wing's side when I'm going through something I find challenging.
Even though sixes are known for their fear, they are also the most courageous of the Enneagram types. A six's main goal is to escape their anxiety and they can do this by jumping headfirst into obstacles. The Enneagram Institute defines sixes as, "Both strong and weak, fearful and courageous, trusting and distrusting, defenders and provokers, sweet and sour, aggressive and passive, bullies and weaklings, on the defensive and on the offensive, thinkers and doers, group people and soloists, believers and doubters, cooperative and obstructionistic, tender and mean, generous and petty—and on and on. It is the contradictory picture that is the characteristic "fingerprint" of Sixes, the fact that they are a bundle of opposites."
Living my life as a six on the Enneagram has truly opened my eyes to realize that the person I am can be the best of both worlds. There are some days my anxiety gets the best of me and I need extra reassurance. Then there are other days when I feel like no one can touch me and I'm the badest bitch on this Earth.
