Emo Music Never Dies

Because sometimes we all feel a bit like Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday.

With Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional on the road for their Hands Down tour, I thought it appropriate to give the genre of emo/pop/punk/power/rock/amazing a little attention. While the skinny jeans may not fit anymore and the black eyeliner has all washed off, the lyrics still hold true. Below are my top 10 favorite songs and reasons why I still love them even though I'm not a preteen anymore.

"Everything Is Alright" by Motion City Soundtrack

Because when everything is not alright, Motion City knows just how to cheer you up with their pop punk number.

"Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard

Because we’ve all been 16 and wanted to “leave this town and run forever."

"The Middle" By Jimmy Eat World

I still pretend Jim Adkins is talking to me.

"Hands Down" by Dashboard Confessional

If Chris Carraba didn’t steal your heart, this song about his favorite day with a girl will make you melt.

"Dark Blue" by Jack's Mannequin

Because we’ve all felt “alone in a crowded room” and Andrew McMahon’s melodic lyrics and piano tunes pinpoint that teenage (and every age) feeling so well.

"Dear Maria, Count Me In" by All Time Low

Because we all still want to be "Maria."

"Punk Rock Princess" by Something Corporate

Because I still think of myself as a Punk Rock Princess.

"I Miss You" by Blink-182

While “I Miss You” may not have made it to number one on the charts like “All the Small Things,” it sure lets us wallow in our emo punk sadness.

"MakeDamnSure" by Taking Back Sunday

For when you just want to get really really angry.

"Wishing Well" by The Airborne Toxic Event

Because sometimes you still feel like you “wanna run away, run away.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
