I've encountered countless changes in my 20 years of life. From location changes due to my dad's job that took us from numerous towns in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, to transferring into Providence College after my freshman year at Keene State College, I've become accustomed to accepting new and unfamiliar changes in my life.
Not everyone is programmed to willingly accept change in their lives; some detest the thought of altering their lives even in the smallest aspect. Coming from my experience, people who feel that hesitation and unwillingness to accept change are usually coming from a place of fear. This is nothing to be ashamed of; the human mind is built to favor routine and consistency. However, this doesn't leave much room for our minds to grow and accept new experiences and people into our lives.
Opening up your life to change can only help you prosper in your daily life. Transferring colleges was one of the scariest decisions I've ever chosen to make. I was perfectly comfortable at my first college. I had an amazing group of friends and was enjoying my classes. But I didn't feel challenged in every aspect of my life in the way I felt I should be; I wanted to feel uncomfortable and vulnerable. So, I picked myself up out of my comfort zone and made a big life decision. And I couldn't be happier with the place I'm in right now, and that would've never been possible if I hadn't been willing to make that drastic change and created that opportunity to open myself up to new options.
Allowing yourself to accept change can also help you get to know yourself and who you really are. Trying different things and putting yourself in new and maybe uncomfortable situations helps you figure out your likes and dislikes as a person. If you struggle with embracing change, start by making little changes in your daily life. Join a new club, or go out with a different group of friends. There's no wrong way to go about integrating change into your life. As long as you have a positive outlook on all prospects, accepting change will come easily to you.
