Elephant Appreciation Day is September 22 and needless to say, this is one of my favorite days of the year. Elephants are beautiful animals and they are my favorite.
I encourage all of you to pursue some kind of knowledge about elephants at some point in your life because they are truly incredible. Elephants travel and live in family units, however, their communities are matriarchal and bulls live apart from the herds.
Often times, bulls will gather together to form a loose-knit community but these are rather unstable. Elephants are social creatures and they display signs of affection for each other frequently. One story I have heard about elephants that speaks to their social and affectionate nature.
A calf was caught in a watering hole and the rest of the herd hung out and tried with all of their might to pull the calf out. The herd never left the calf and they tried several ways to pull the little one out and eventually had success. Yay!
You can check out this link to see this cute little guy and the help of the rest of the herd.
Elephants' care for the rest of the herd is touching indeed and is just one of the reasons we should take time to appreciate them. Besides this, elephants have been hunted by poachers for years to satisfy high demands for their ivory tusks.
Elephants are majestic creatures and they don't deserve to be poached. Perhaps next Elephant Appreciation Day we can all strive to spread the word about these amazing creatures and their gentle nature.
