Why The Election Made Me Proud To Be A Political Science Major
Bellarmine

As I sat in total disbelief watching the election results roll in till 3 AM a million thoughts raced through my head. How was this possible, how did we as a country elect Donald Trump, and most importantly what comes next? I think that was the most pressing issue on my mind, the future. I’ve always known that I wanted to be a problem solver, fix the ever-present issues in our society and it's one of the main reasons I decided to major in Political Science. Being a Poli Sci major means that I’ve dealt with family and friends rolling their eyes joking about how just maybe I’ll make a difference in the transportation department of the lowest level of government. And maybe there was a time when I thought they were right. I mean I knew I wasn't the next Leslie Knope, I wouldn’t be satisfied working Parks and Recreation with unmotivated co-workers but I also knew that the chance of me changing the world were extremely low. That all changed when the headlines read President-elect Trump. While coming to terms with this news a sense of motivation and pride washed over me. In that moment I realized that being a Political Science not only meant making a change in the world, but having the ability to write history. Using every sense of your being to work towards a just cause, and fighting harder when things don't go as planned. Watching popular votes and electoral votes roll in Tuesday night solidified an idea that had never occurred to me before. What I’m working towards now: a college degree, a job in Public Policy, I have the ability to make history. I could be responsible for changing bits and pieces of history, or even something as historical as Trumps presidency. My major, although sometimes ridiculed for being “a waste of time” can also be something powerful. Something that sets up the world we live in, a more accepting world, and a world I can help create. Election day left me worried about the future of our country and a bit disappointed in some of the people around me. But I found light in all of the negativity, a sign that I’m choosing a life that can inspire the next generation. A Political Science degree now holds extreme weight in society and I’m proud to say that I will be part of the generation that uses our knowledge to change the world for the better.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
