Donald John Trump is now our President-Elect. It feels strange to utter those words. But, it is true. For better or for worse, Donald Trump is going to be the next President of the United States of America. A celebrity businessman with absolutely no political experience whatsoever is our President. A man mostly well known for telling people "you're fired" is our President. He's certainly the first WWE Hall of Famer to be President. Many people are happy, others sad, furious, and even scared. But it goes beyond Trump, as the Republican Party also controls both chambers of Congress and will likely put a conservative justice in the Supreme Court. Even now, I am attempting to rationalize how this happened and what I should do from here?
There are a large number of reasons as to why this happened, but I will give you what I believe to be the main reason why Hillary lost. She did not make an effort to talk to the working class. Her efforts to court celebrity endorsements and dab served only to further her support among college liberals, people she already had in the bag. Instead she, as well as the rest of the neoliberal establishment, dismissed Trump's supporters as deplorables. I know people are going to blame this on misogyny, but many women voted for Trump as well. According to Washington Post, Clinton failed to win a majority of white women. While there certainly was a segment of the population who thought a woman wasn't fit for power, but to dismiss all of Trump's supporters as misogynists is to make the same mistakes Clinton made, and will only anger people more.
Because Hillary won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote, many continue to condemn the Electoral College, but I must ask, how many of you would say it did it's job if the roles were reversed? It is acting like Trump's supporters are mindless rabble that cost Clinton the election to begin with. Still, we have to remember that Hillary did win the popular vote. The mandate of the masses still leans towards progressivism, but much of the masses still feel unheard by the establishment. That's how Trump won the primary, and that's how he won the general. He was finally talking to middle America again, talking to working class whites again. They were people who felt that the GOP establishment focused too much on rich people and that the Democrats focused too much on identity politics. The Democrats relied too much on Clinton, too much on the establishment, and too much on the college educated for support. The fight against bigotry is a just one, but when you so callously paint all of middle America with the same brush saying that they're all bigoted, it doesn't get them to support you it turns them against you. Liberals have to learn to fight bigotry in the right places, instead of just levying broad accusations at people.
Would Sanders,or any other Democratic candidate, have won if he had ran against Trump? I honestly do not know. But, because Hillary won the primary, she should have taken a page out of the Sanders book and talked to the working class, but she chose to dismiss many of them as deplorables instead. This led to much of the Obama coalition to actually vote for Trump. Wisconsin and Pennsylvania went to the GOP for the first time since 1988 and 1992 respectively. Obama won Ohio both times, but it now went to Trump. According to the Washing Post, Trump also won more support from non-whites than Romney did. Trump, a man who ran what many consider to be a racist campaign, won more minority support than Romney, showing that even non-whites have begun to lose faith that the Democratic Party will help them.
Most of the Trump supporters that I know are good people. If liberals continue to hoot and holler about how they're bigoted, you only serve to drive them further into the arms of conservatism, instead of into the arms of the left. If you continue to be violent, the same thing will happen. It is clear that the Democrats have lost the support of the working class, especially working class whites. The smug condescension that much of the working class associates with educated college liberals really shone through during this election. They made a big mistake looking down on the working class, the very thing Sanders did not want them to do.
I've heard many lefitsts tell people to fight Trump with every fiber of their being; I disagree with that. Engage in peaceful protests against things you disagree with him doing, but acknowledge that some good may come out of this. Looking at Donald Trump's 100 Day Plan, I have found some aspects of the plan that I agree with. I do believe in renegotiating NAFTA and pulling out of the TPP. I also believe that people shouldn't be able to become lobbyists immediately after leaving office. Trump has also shown a willingness compromise and is backing down on attempting a total repeal of Obamacare. Senator Bernie Sanders has said that he will oppose Trump when he tries to attack to minorities, but will support him if he tries to help working Americans. We should all do the same.
I am not scared of what Trump will bring, because I have faith that there will be people who fight it, but I am nervous that politics will only move further to the right as a result of this election. The neoliberals will continue to discuss how compromise is important in all situations, instead of just in some situations. They will continue to lose ground to conservatives as they did in the Clinton and Obama presidencies. The Left must not refuse to fight. Be willing to compromise if a policy helps the American people, but don't be afraid to fight if a policy will damage the country instead of just "meeting halfway." Allow for a peaceful, democratic transition of power, but be willing to fight that power whenever it attempts to be oppressive. I hear many people claiming they will leave country now. Don't. This is my country, and I will stay and fight for what I believe in. If you truly believe in protecting those who may face oppression, you must do the same.
Do not take this as an endorsement of the culture that propelled Trump into the White House. Not every Trump supporter is a racist, but Trump has the support of the Klan and many other racist groups. Those are the aspects that we should fight with every fiber of our being. Do not let anyone condemn you for the simple act of protesting against Trump. Do not be afraid to let your voice be heard. Take action and fight for what you believe in. Democrats, you must bring up the fight for working class again. Do not let them be swayed by regressive populism that only serves to hold the country back. Sway them with the message of unity you so often preach. Do not dismiss them as deplorables, listen to their problems and fight for their rights again. Do not let the idea that because they're working class whites, they must be racist, take hold. Fight that idea until it is extinguished once and for all.
But, you must fight the bigotry where it exists. Do not waste your time attacking every Trump supporter, because that will only make things worse. Use your time to fight the Klan instead. There have been many hate crimes now since Trump has won, condemn these instead of every supporter. You must fight the hate and fight it well. Yet, some Trump supporters have been attacked as well, and that is not a productive way to fight. Spend your time doing productive things to fight this. Don't just share this article and claim to be done, let your daily actions reflect your desire to fight. Don't attack people; do things that will make the government listen to us. Do things that will make people take us seriously instead of dismissing us whiny liberals. To the Trump supporters who claim to hate the bigoted wing of the Trump supporters, I know you exist. I want America to be great just as much as you do. To make that happen you must join us hand in hand if we are going to prevent a culture of bigotry to once again take hold in the United States. and I love this country too much to let that happen.
