8 Activities To Do If You Are Stuck In Houston For Spring Break

Spring break is coming up. For seven days, 158 hours, 10,080 minutes you will be free from class, professors, and that annoying kid that sits next to you in your English lecture. Phew. Unlucky for you, however, you will be stuck at home for whatever reason it may be. For me, being on a dance team I don't have the liberty of taking a week off. So, before you drown your sorrows and start your Netflix and ice cream binge, here's some local fun things you can get into:

1. Eat

Well, duh. But eat well. You're on vacation right? Why not stuff a 2,000 calorie burger down your throat? Pictured above is from Shake Shack, which recently opened in the Galleria. Besides Shake Shack, however, there's a million and one amazing eateries here in Houston

2. Drink

This one is another no brainer. Off of school, time to party! I would suggest one of the many outdoor bars we have here in Houston. Pictured above is Axelrad, a beer garden with a patio and outdoor entertainment

3. The Rodeo

Not a huge fan myself, but this year Alicia Keys, The Chainsmokers (Baby pull me closer in the backseat of your rover...), and even Blink 182 will be making appearances. Get your tickets in advance and be sure to get a deep friend oreo!

4. Cool off with some shaved ice

I haven't been here myself but I heard it was the best in Houston, and honestly there's no other cool delight than flavored ice. Yum.

5. Shop Outdoors

Houston has a plethora of outdoor shopping malls that I know your empty wallet is just calling for you to get out to. Pictured above is Houston Premium Outlets, which is outdoors AND discounted.

6. Miller Outdoor Theater

Perfect for date night! The opening will be on March 17th, be sure to bring blankets and snacks and enjoy a show in this beautiful outdoor theater.

7. Rent a bike in downtown Houston

If you've ever walked around downtown, you might have stumbled upon some bike racks, where yes, you can rent bikes hourly. Not only are you getting some fresh air and light cardio, but you get a chance to explore the beautiful city that we all know and love.

8. Outdoor yoga

Discovery Green offers outdoor yoga on Saturdays and some Mondays, just be sure to check the calendar on their website. Because who doesn't want some namaste with the scorching Houston heat penetrating their backs?

There ya have it, now when you're scrolling through countless beach and bikini pictures on Instagram, at least you can say you did some outdoor yoga and biked around downtown Houston. Live it up, friends!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
