Education Majors Do More Than Just 'Cut Out Gingerbread Men'

So, I'm not sure if a lot of you are on Twitter, or have a Twitter, or if you have seen this tweet/response about Education Majors, but it really got my blood boiling.

I'm not sure if the Tweet originated with this person or if it's just been copied from one account to the other, but none the less it still has me shook.

What I want to tell you is, Education is more than just cutting out Gingerbread men or thinking about coloring activities that students could do.

Education is a major of passion, just like any other major, only we have to have enough passion or drive for 30-100 students. Do people not realize that there are many branches of education?

There are so many possible choices of what kind of education you could do or teach. There's Elementary, Secondary, Math, Science, Higher Education, Music Education, Physical Education, Theatre Education, Special Education, and so many more. My list could go on for miles almost.

Do you want to know something else about Education majors? We chose this major for a reason. We know that we are going into one of the most underpaid jobs in the career chain.

Do you want to know something else? We don't care.

Of course, money is important and having a way to support yourself is important, but we have something so much better driving us to be teachers, and that's love. We have a love for kids and education that goes beyond even our own understanding sometimes. We want to shape the minds of children everywhere and teach them to become passionate about something just like us.

If I could convince someone to grow up and want to become a teacher, or simply just inspire them to become a scientist or an actor, then that will be a win in my book.

So, sure, maybe you are sitting next to me while I cut out some gingerbread men for my classes or I'm putting together a coloring activity, but do you see the heart that goes behind it? Do you see the 15-page papers about a child's mental illness and how it affects them in a classroom or an analysis on how deal with certain behaviors in a classroom? Do you see the countless lesson plans that we have to write out for every day of the week? Do you see the hours that we put in every day just to fill up a 7-8 hour day for our students?

Education is not easy. Even for someone who is passionate about education and wanting to teach kids, it's not easy.

Could you deal with 20-25 kids every day? How about being a high school teacher and teaching 6 out of the 7 classes of the day with each class having 20 kids in it? Am I saying that cutting out gingerbread men is harder than doing a 20 plus page biochem lab report? Not in the slightest, but I also think you need to realize that there is probably more to those gingerbread men than what meets the eye.

Also, on another side note about how it says "complains about not having enough time?" Well, do you know how hard it is to cut straight lines and cut circles and edges? Because for me, it's hard! Also, after we're done cutting them, we probably have an analysis paper or lesson plan to type up about how whatever activity we're going to do is beneficial for our students and how it will help them in their education.

But, I want to end on this note: All Majors are important. Whatever major you choose, you will work just as hard. Now, that's not to say that some majors aren't harder than others. Could I be a Science major? Probably not because it's not my favorite subject and I'm also not very good at it either.

However, as college students, we have to respect one another. We have to help each other out. We have to support each other. College can be hard in general, and I may not know anything about your major, but that doesn't give you the right to judge mine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
