I sat in a diner with my family. A man and his family sat next to us and began a conversation. He looked like any normal middle-aged man, in his baseball cap and T-shirt, but minutes later we found out that he had multiple bachelor's degrees, multiple masters degrees and a doctorate. The man was a professor at the local university, and by looking at me. He could tell I was a freshman in college. After speaking with him, I knew I needed to better appreciate my education. An education can create movements, destroy barriers, and make the world a better place.
Less than 10 percent of people on this planet has a degree. Anyone who attends university is considered to be a minority in the world population and is lucky to be able to continue their education for their own benefit. A lot of the times students don't appreciate how lucky they are to be receiving an education. When students are in the middle of finals and they have three projects due and two tests the next day it's incredibly hard to remember how amazing learning is, but students need to remember how important learning is. Students need to see that every moment they go to school it is a privilege and an opportunity.
Getting an education isn't necessarily about a career. Getting an education is about an individual bettering themselves so that they can better the world around them. Students often hear adults discuss how they're degree doesn't match their career choice. It sounds discouraging that you go to school for four years to be something and then your entire career path is altered, but the experience that comes from everything you learn in your college courses it Is worth so much more than a career. My mom started school to be a criminology major and now she successfully runs her own interior design business. She doesn't regret her time at school at all because it is made her a more well-rounded and intelligent individual.
Malala, an activist for women's education rights, has proven that the power of education can change the world. Since her father encouraged her to get an education when other women we're told not to Malala was able to create one of the biggest movement towards equal rights for women in history. She appreciated the education she was given every day and because of that she taught others what the gift of education can bring. Malala didn't get educated because it was a career path. She educated herself because she appreciated all the knowledge that the world had to offer.
Listening to someone who has an extensive academic resume is thrilling. Every day students need to appreciate how lucky they are to be learning about the world around them and being a part of the educated public. It's sad that many students don't value education from the time they're in high school and then, in turn, don't go to college. I understand that everyone cannot be good every subject but as long as students put their best effort into becoming well-rounded individuals and appreciating their education the world will only be a better place.
