All realistic artists know that in order to get their work out there, they must use social media. It is a simple and vital tool that helps anyone build a platform that they can stand on independently. In this generation, it is important to use the resources you have, to form it in a way that will help inspire and create new and refreshing ideas.
Take Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, and Joan Smalls, who all landed a spot on the “Annual Fashion Bible”: The September Issue of Vogue. They were chosen particularly because they are the “It Girls” of the upcoming year, thanks to social media. Cara’s modeling career boosted immensely when her pictures first surfaced the internet. People around the world were extremely taken with her look as well as her thick, dark eyebrows, which helped her career as well. There are now thousands of memes and shirts mentioning her eyebrows. Nowadays, you cannot click on a social media app or a open a fashion magazine, and not see Cara. These three models are set upon a platform built by social media itself.
It is a different generation, where the audience and readers want to know everything about their favorite models and artists on a more personal level. Social media does that, and can spread their news. Karlie Kloss uses her social media as a tool of marketing her brand of cookies, called "Karlie Kookies." It has seemingly increased sales, spread the word of eating healthy, and has given proceeds to the FEED projects to help kids around the world who are suffering from hunger. Vogue's September issue read, “All savvy on social media, they’re building their own brands and single-handedly catapulting themselves to this generation’s version of supermodel status.”
The new era of earning a living has grown increasingly different than it was four years ago. Social media, such as Instagram, is helping those entrepreneurs to advertise on their accounts and have careers as a social media model. It may sound like an insane career, but it is one that is seemingly more popular this year than ever. Musicians and artists can now upload their music for free, onto a music app called Soundcloud. It is an app that has helped many artist's careers take off. Music travels very fast online, in this generation. More people are finding out that they have so many opportunities to branch out and explore different areas of work, right on their cellular device.
It has helped my career of being a photographer, by being able to access people that want to work with me. With my Instagram, I have been able to post all of my work and have clothing lines and models emailing me to do photoshoots. It is an incredible source, and an informational way of getting my artwork and music out there.
Some people try to dismiss this idea of becoming famous or earning a living on social media. However, if you are an artist, entrepreneur, musician, or model, social media is the holy grail for getting your work out there. Because if your work is not online or anywhere to be found on the internet, it simply does not exist yet. The second you upload or post your work, it becomes something that is yours and will be noticed by at least one person.
The fact of the matter is that using social media to your advantage can be extremely positive and helpful for your career; you just need to utilize it.
