8 Things To Do During Quarantine That Don't Involve Netflix

Staying inside can be boring, but there's lots of ways to stay busy and feel accomplished. I know I've personally struggled to find ways to actively fill my time besides binging shows on Hulu and rewatching my favorite movies on Netflix. Doing something creative or something that actually requires brain power helps me feel like I accomplished something during the day. I hope these suggestions inspire you to get out of bed today as much as they inspire me.

1. Write a letter

Everyone loves getting a hand addressed letter to them in the mail. There's something exciting about getting mail that isn't your stereotypical catalogue, coupon book or *sighs* bills. Not only does writing a letter to someone else help you show your love for them, it also gives you something to look forward to when you get a letter back from them.

2. Actually finish (or start) that book on your nightstand

The feeling of accomplishment that comes from finishing a good book is almost euphoric, not to mention how many cognitive benefits reading gives you. I have a stack of 11 books by my bed that I've been waiting to read, saying "I'll start that when I have extra tome on my ands." Careful what you wish for.

3. Reorganize/ Redecorate your room

It's exciting to plan something new and different for your room if you're looking for a change. I just took down a poster of multiplication tables that has been hanging next to my bed for the past 10 years. Reorganizing your closet/ drawers, dusting off bookshelves or vacuuming under your bed are also very satisfying tasks.

4. Watch some free online classes about something that interests you

I get it, I'm taking college classes from home now, and the last thing I want is more homework. But the vibe changes when you are watching a class for the sole purpose of learning something you want to learn (and you won't be tested on it or assigned homework.) There are a lot of great free lectures on youtube or offered for free online. I have been watching some music history lectures and taking virtual piano and sign language classes whenever I want to. There is so much to learn about, onlt a google search away, and now is a great opportunity to start.

5. Find an art form that interests you and create

Whether it's painting, finger knitting, coloring, playing an instrument, or graphic design, there are so many ways to express yourself and have a creative outlet. Many of these art forms don't even require expensive supplies or extensive knowledge before you can do it (like finger knitting for example- an online beginners tutorial and ball of yarn are all you need!)

6. Get in your kitchen and spend all day making something

Now is a great opportunity to find a great recipe online and spend a ridiculous amount of time cooking/ baking it. Whether it's homemade bread, a made from scratch dinner or a dessert you've always wanted to make but never had time to, now is a great opportunity to experiment in the kitchen. And did I mention you get to eat it at the end? What better way to celebrate a job well done.

7. Go on a virtual tour of an art museum or zoo

If you can't be there in person, be there from your living room. Many zoos and art museums are offering free virtual tours so you can experience something from the outside from the safety of the inside of your home.

8. Up-cycle common household items into something new

From mason jars to wine corks to old maps to orange peels, there may be more "up-cycleable" items in your home than you think. Check out some of these ideas:

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
