Your Survival Guide To Sylly Week

The do's and don't's of the best week of the semester.

Your Survival Guide To Sylly Week
Crash Burn

As our time back at State soon approaches, our excitement peaks. Incoming freshmen and everyone else, here are my most useful do's and don't's to get you to survive the madness known as Sylly Week:

DO: Go out every night during Sylly week

It sounds like a lot of partying, I know, but you need to build up your tolerance and rally if you want to survive this year. Sylly week is the best week of the semester and you must take advantage of it. Explore Frat Row, meet new people and enjoy yourself!

DON'T: Skip class

Sylly week is a freebie week given to you by the PSU gods. Use it well. You (probably) won't get a lot of work or miss much in class, but you never know. It's always good to start the semester on a good note and going to class from the beginning will set you up for success for the whole semester.

DO: Get Canyon Pizza at some point

Although this pizza isn't the best, it's a right of passage to finally experience dollar pizza. Watch Asher Roth's "I Love College" come to life at PSU when "[you] can get pizza a dollar a slice" (cash only). There's nothing like sitting on the hill next to Canyon with your homies eating pizza and enjoying life. Don't do it every night though because you'll probably be over it after the first night.

DON'T: Think that drunk calories don't count

Fastest way to the Freshman 15 (and then some) is late night snacking after a night of partying. Do you really need that D.P. Dough tonight? Or those Insomnia cookies? You don't. Drink water and go to sleep, your sober body the next morning will thank you when you wake up feeling refreshed and recharged, not drowsy and sluggish. Also expert tip—leave Advil or Motrin next to your bed so you can take that after your night of partying and wake up hangover-free the next day. You will be #blessed the next day if you follow this.

DO: Make friends

Try to meet people in your classes on the first few days so you have people to sit with. Having at least one person to sit with in class makes that class so much less stressful, and you'll have someone to compare notes and homework with. Be outgoing, everyone is just as nervous as you are and you will make someone's day by starting a conversation with them.

DON'T: Think you're too cool for school

Don't be that unfriendly kid who sits in the back of the class thinking they're too cool for the rest of the class. You probably won't end up paying attention, won't know what's going on, and will be struggling through that class. Be social, attentive and participate in class. You will find the class to be much easier if you are involved.

DO: Hook up with that cute boy/girl you've been chatting up.

Sylly week is all about getting into the shenanigans of Penn State. Live a little and enjoy yourself. If you're feelin' yourself, act on it. Do whatever you are comfortable with.

DON'T: Hook up with every cute boy/girl you've been chatting up.

As awkward as it is walking into class on the first day and seeing the person you hooked up with the night before, it's even more awkward when you see all of the people you hooked up with. You don't need to go for everyone, you can be selective. There's a whole year ahead of you to be young, wild and free, so pace yourself. (Not trying to slut-shame, just trying to save everyone from any potentially awkward/embarrassing situations).

Sylly week is all about having fun, but not so much fun that you can't make it to class or rally the next night. Party hard and stay safe.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
