Keeping the extra pounds off in college can be tough, especially with a busy schedule. Do not be fooled, there are ways to not only stay fit, but also to lose weight in college without putting in much effort. Just follow these simple Dos and Don’ts, and you will be on your way to shedding those extra pounds in no time.
DO take the stairs. Yes, we can all be tempted to be a lazy bum and take the elevator, but taking the stairs every chance you get can tone your calves, thighs, and butt. Plus, walking up the stairs burns calories, while taking the elevator burns zero calories.
DON’T eat at the sorority house. Now I know how much you sorority ladies love poppyseed chicken night at the house, but many of the meals at the house are high in calories and fat. Now you don’t have to stop eating at the house all-together, but eat in moderation, and always check to see what is being served at the house so you know whether or not the meal is healthy enough to eat.
DO walk. If you are on campus, especially if you live on campus, try to walk everywhere. I live in Magnolia, and if I walk from my dorm all the way to my sorority house, it is exactly one mile. That is one mile extra of walking just for your whole day. That does not include walking to and from classes. Walking one mile burns about 100 calories.
DON’T eat fast food every night. Those late night study sessions may leave you with the munchies, but don’t make that an excuse to drive to Taco Bell. Eat something healthy and satisfying such as an apple. Not only will this help you stay healthy, it also saves you money because you won’t have to pay the gas money that it takes to drive to a fast food restaurant. Yes, you can treat yourself every once in a while to fast food, but just don’t make it every night.
DO watch your portions. Like stated in the last few points, you don’t have to necessarily cut out the things you are eating, just watch how much you eat of it. The biggest thing is to only eat when you are hungry. It can be tempting to eat if you are pulling an all-nighter for a big test the next day, but you have to make sure you are eating only because you are hungry and not because you just want food.
These steps are very easy to follow if your busy schedule does not allow you time to visit the Sanderson Center. They are steps that could also lead you on the track of a healthier lifestyle, not only in college but for the rest of your life.
