About a year ago, while scrolling through Spotify, I heard a song called, “Wicked Ones.” I automatically fell in love with the voice I heard and raced to the artist’s name to find out who sang this song. Dorothy was the answer.
Dorothy is the name of the lead singer and name of band that includes three other guys, Gregg Cash on bass, Zac Morris on drums and Mark Jackson on guitar. They are an L.A.-based band and have been called the band bringing back rock and roll. After hearing this album, I can definitely agree with this saying. The first track on the album is, “Kiss it.” In an interview, Martin stated, “"The song is about being a free spirit who doesn't subscribe to the emotional and mental confines of society," "It's about being fed up with being told what to do, who to be, how to act, and saying, ‘F*ck the rules, I'm going to be my own person.'" It sets the vibe for the rest of the songs, which are packed with powerful vocals and lyrics from Martin. The guitar riffs and drums add to the soulful words belted out by Dorothy.
“Raise Hell,” continues that "I-don’t-give-a-f*ck" feeling, urging listeners to be unique and break the status quo, leaving a blazing trail behind them. “Wicked Ones,” contains lyrics, “This night ain’t for the holy man with the holy plan, for the promised land. This night we got the evil hand and the evil hand gonna raise the dead.” It’s an anthem for the hell raising whiskey loving rebels who are going to bring hell wherever they roam. One of my favorite songs, “Gun In My Hand,” talks about how love can be a double edged sword which I can relate to. It’s like you dream about meeting the right person and one day you think you do, but yet you’ve got that gun in your hand or knife in your heart as Dorothy sings, and you can’t help but ask why? Why would love do this to me? Martin stated, “Love does crazy things to people and people in love do crazy things.”
Another great one is, “Woman,” a feminist rock song in which Martin sings, “Don’t call me a woman until you act like a man.” This track puts the focus on Dorothy, reminding you again that a woman can do anything. Here is a female lead singer of a rock band showing that women can kick ass. Martin stated in an interview that, “I take a lot of pride in being a female who fronts a rock band in a male-dominated industry where women more often than not are seen as sex objects, portrayed strictly on sex appeal and their looks. I just think a lot more girls should step up and not be afraid to be the captain of their own ship – which is something I never saw myself doing, yet here I am – and it’s just really empowering and gives me a lot of joy and hopefully inspires everyone else as well." She's showing girls that you can rock hard like the boys.
Rock and roll never died, but Dorothy is giving it a huge wave of life once again, making the sound rise up to the ears of mainstream. People are remembering again why they love this genre and I’m excited to watch Dorothy grow and grow. Dorothy Martin has got a vocal powerhouse and a heart full of soul gripping lyrics. So get your shots of whiskey ready, because you will definitely want to pour one out for this band.
