For the incoming college freshman or upperclassmen who chose dorm life, dorm shopping is sometimes stressful. Learning from my experience living in the dorms as a freshman, I found what made my dorm room feel like home.
Here are a few tips and tricks to help you create a space amazing not just for you and your roomie, but for everyone that visits your dorm.
1. You don't have room: arrange your beds
Yes, when you put your beds from side to side it looks "cute," but in most cases, that arrangement takes up the room. Not to mention, it increases the chances of you bumping into your bed or whatever is in close proximity of the bed.
Here's the solution: how about moving the beds in what I call, an "opposite-adjacent" arrangement. Basically, the bed hugs a wall, the other bed hugs the other wall (making a 90-degree angle) in a way that it leaves a corner between the two. That way, you create a bigger space to put in a small coffee table and a couple of ottomans for your guest to lounge in while hanging out!
2. Your storage bins are shy: let them speak
The fact that a futon for your dorm is out of the budget doesn't mean that you can't have a hangout spot for all of your friends. Storage bins and ottomans with storage are lifesavers for your dorm room. These bad boys are multi-functional. They double as chairs, step stools, and a storage container.
Storage ottomans disguised as chairs are amazing for living space while storing items and using them as step stools for getting into bed. Large storage items such as long ottomans and footlocker chests (and yes, you'll find them under $60) are great for making tables.
You can put a small blanket, as well as centerpieces including magazines, books, and metal/glass plates to make them resemble coffee tables.
3. The dorm lighting sucks: bring your own lights

Raise your hand if you are sick of the huge dorm lighting so horrendous you get migraines from it every day. Here are a bunch of good solutions to fix the lighting problem.
The creative way is to bring string lights. String lights arrange from different colors to different shapes in order to bring personality to the dorm. Lamps are also a great way to improve lighting for the dorm. Floor lamps are a perfect alternative source of light for the whole room instead of the huge light in the ceiling. Desk lamps are great lights for studying and getting ready for the day.
And don't forget: LED lighting is the best type of lighting for dorm living as they provide amazing lighting for studying, pictures, makeup, and making videos while doing wonders for the environment. If all else fails, then natural lighting from outdoors is the best bet; just open up the blinds and shine away!
4. Dorm floors don't coordinate: bring a rug

If your dorm has carpet floors, you are quite unlucky because not only do they have a rep of being "outdated," but imagine the hassle of spending racks on a vacuum that sucks the nastiness off of the floor. Not to mention, if you spilled a colored liquid on a carpeted floor, good luck getting it off or paying a fee after you move out.
However, having hardwood floors is just as bad, especially for clumsy people, because what if you broke your phone screen on the floor? Not good. I suggest bringing in your own rug, because not only does it saves the floors from getting ruined, but I bet your rugs are way more comfortable for your feet because of added comfort.
My favorite rug picks are shag rugs, memory foam bathroom mats (yes, they work wonders as a welcome mat or a desk rug), or if you're feeling bougie, a faux fur rug.
5. Nothing feels comfortable yet: bring blankets
Do you feel uncomfortable in dorm beds that are hard as a brick? Does your desk chair stick out like a sore thumb? Well, you never bring enough blankets! Decorative blankets are great for dressing up desk chairs and making your bed look put together.
I also add fleece blankets for extra comfort, especially for sleeping, or even bringing them to that one class with Antarctica-like conditions.
6. Your dorm doesn't feel big enough: put up a mirror

I don't know how are you going to survive without this item in your dorm: a mirror. Mirrors for a dorm are versatile. Everyone needs a long mirror for outfit checks, #OOTD pictures, and trying on clothing. Makeup mirrors are life saving for obviously putting on makeup, doing face routines, and even doing your hair.
And if you want a kicker combine it with LED lighting, and you get an LED-illuminated makeup mirror; you'll never have to worry about getting a desk lamp ever again.
Now you've read this article, you know what to buy to bring to your dorm. When you follow these tips, your dorm becomes so inviting that your friends wish their dorm looks like yours. I wish you well with dorm shopping!
