Don't Worry, Be Happy

The fall semester has started to pick up for most of us, by now.

Don't Worry, Be Happy

Exams are happening. Deadlines are fast approaching. If you're like me, you are watching your friends prepare for interviews and the career fair from a comfortable spot on the couch, hunched over a bowl of Frosted Flakes. I bet some of you feel overwhelmed. But that's okay. Here are some reasons why you shouldn't stress and should look forward to the rest of fall semester.

Fall weather. This can mean so many things, like leaves on the ground, hoodies and jeans, a fire pit in the front yard. Whatever the fall months mean to you, they're reason enough to cheer up. It also means October break, which is always a great breather from the steady grind of classes.

Formal season. Every house has their winter formal, and everyone does it differently. Formals are great traditions that are passed down through the pledge classes, and have been highlights in my last three fall semesters. There's just something about partying in formal attire that makes people forget real life. During formal season, for a night, we all get to pretend we aren't poor college students.

Football. We've got college football, NFL, and the perfect weather to play pick up games. The trifecta. Surely everyone reading this has their own reason for loving football season. Season tickets, tailgates, breakfast club, and the whole game day atmosphere at Purdue always makes for a weekend to behold. Sundays in the fall are like no other kind of Sunday. There's nothing quite like nursing the hangover with Sunday Night Football.

Holiday season. Whatever you celebrate, fall semester or winter break is probably when you're celebrating. Nothing beats reuniting with the family for some home cooked food and conversation. If your family is like mine, the party starts at dinner on Friday and doesn't end until Sunday when the liquor stores close. I always forget that Indiana is the only state stubborn enough to crash our party.

There's another career fair in the spring. I know this is a concern for a lot of seniors who have some pressure to find a job after graduation. You still have time. Why not take a fifth year? In a hurry to leave? So what if you didn't jump the gun and get a head start on everyone? It's a long race, my friends. Maybe you had trouble getting back into a normal school routine and couldn't get your resume together. Maybe you weren't interested in any of the companies that came to the fall career fair. Maybe you just didn't want to dress up. Whatever your reason, don't sweat it. We're all going to graduate with Purdue degrees, and that's going to get us a job.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
