Are you interested in joining Greek life? If you are I say you should definitely go out and go through recruitment. Now you’re probably thinking “if i’m not a freshman or sophomore it’s too late for me to go through recruitment.” Well the answer is no. It is never too late to join Greek life especially if you find the right organization.
I went through recruitment my spring semester Junior year. My best friend literally dragged me to go through recruitment. At the time I honestly thought I was wasting my time because I felt like I was “old,” compared to the freshmen that were so excited to find the organization for them.
The way formal recruitment works is that you have to go to every room and talk to every sorority on your campus. The first room I walked into I felt so uncomfortable and thought “I am wasting my time I’m about to leave.” Thankfully, I didn’t.
I stuck through and the next room was my organization’s room. This may sound cliche but as soon as I walked into that room I knew, I knew this is where I wanted to be. It was only confirmed when I began talking to sisters.
Every time someone asked me if I was a freshmen I would cringe because I would have to tell them that I was not, I was actually a Junior. However, the girls in my organization made me feel so comfortable with the fact that I was trying to join Greek life my junior of college.
As I went through each day of recruitment I knew what organization I wanted I was nervous hoping that they wanted me just as much as I wanted them. As the days go on you see less and less organizations and goes by the way you rank them and the way they rank you.
Whenever I would see the name of my organization on my schedule I would get so excited. When it came down to the last day, I knew that I only wanted one organization and they were the only organization I put down on the last day of recruitment.
When I got an email saying I received a bid I was the happiest girl ever. Needless to say joining my organization has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. If I had let a preconceived notion that I was too old, I would’ve missed out on a great opportunity.
I’ve met the most amazing people and have made some lifelong bonds. Of course a part of me wishes that I had joined when I was younger so I could have more time in my chapter as an undergrad but if I had done it when I was a freshman I probably wouldn’t have taken it as seriously as I did.
Therefore, I stress if you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior or even a senior go out and try to find the organization for you if you are even a bit interested in it. It will be the best decision you will ever make. I promise you.
