Last Monday, I submitted my article idea to write about our politicians' lack of care to do anything about our school shootings. I am horrified by how many of them we have had recently, and furious about the fact that our politicians do nothing about it. And to add to this, early Friday morning we had a school shooting on Northern Arizona University's campus, right outside my dorm.
This article was supposed to be about the fact that our politicians do nothing whenever a school shooting happens. It was supposed to be about how our politicians will say something to hype up their supporters, and then that's it. But honestly, it doesn't feel right writing a whole article on that right now.
I will just say that we can't do nothing. We need to come up with some kinds of ideas to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
Stephen Colbert addresses this issue well from about 57 seconds in to about 2 minutes.
I don't know what to say anymore. Honestly. A terrible tragedy has struck NAU. I don't even want to go in to the details, because you will have heard about it all over the news, and the shooter deserves no recognition. All I will say is that we lost a member of the NAU Greek community, a member of the Delta Chi fraternity.
We all may tease each other behind our backs. We all may brag about how our own fraternity or sorority is the best around. We all may have our own stereotypes about the other fraternities and sororities on campus. But all differences aside, we are all brothers and sisters. We all want to make a difference in this world. We all care about friendship, sound learning, and making a difference in others' lives. We are all here for the same reasons. We are all Greeks.
After the shooting, I sat around a room with some of my fraternity brothers. It was dead silent. We were all full of sadness, anger, and cluelessness. Questions kept running through our minds. Who could do such a thing? How messed up does a person have to be to resort to killing innocent people? What if it was one of us?
And that's one of the biggest problems. Far too many of us do nothing or brush these shootings aside, because we never imagine these things happening to us. We keep pretending that they will never ever happen. But when they happen to us or to people we know, it is too late.
We need to do something now.
But in the meantime, we all need to come together and console each other. We need to be there for one another. A senseless act of violence just plagued our campus, but we cannot let that bring us down.
I cannot imagine how the brothers of Delta Chi feel right now. Please send your thoughts, prayers, good karma, or whatever you have Delta Chi's way. No one should ever have to experience a tragedy like this.
The brothers of Delta Chi and all members of NAU's Greek community as a whole are strong. We will fight through this senseless tragedy and not let it defeat us. The candlelight vigil Friday night showed how much love and support we all have for each other. It showed that we are all united and that we can all put our individual identities aside and come together as one huge loving, supportive, and caring family.
To the brothers of Delta Chi: Every single member of the Greek community is at your side. We are all here for you. You are not alone.
