When deciding to join a Greek organization, we chose one in which we feel like we belong and where we feel we can most grow. We join because we want a family, a group of individuals we can rely on and build the most amazing memories with. But joining Greek life isn’t just about your organization but also supporting the ones around you. When you chose to wear your letters you choose to represent your own sorority or fraternity, but to represent Greek life as a whole.
Being a member of Greek life means you have a support system bigger than you could ever imagine. Friendships are built on the foundation of giving back to philanthropies that hold your organization together. This past week, alone, my sorority, Alpha Delta Pi at Susquehanna University raised $2,700 for the Ronald McDonald Charity with the help of our community of social organizations and the involvement of the professional women's music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota. Without the support and involvement of different organizations on campus we won't be unified in reaching our goals to make a difference. It is very sad to see others discriminate organizations based on their category of social, service, or professional. Everyones organization wears letters and shares the exact Greek alphabet. Holding a title that can be perceived as “greater” does not make your better than others who wear letters. We wear letters together, we work toward academic achievements and service together, and more importantly we decided to join a organization together. A category does not define your hierarchy in a Greek system. It is what you bring forward and what you contribute to your community. Lets put all labels aside and realize that discriminating ourselves does not accomplish anything but the destruction of unity on a campus.
We are all Greeks. Don’t discriminate the letters.
